Accenture and Qualcomm collaborate to pilot extended reality product for event planning

Accenture and Qualcomm Technologies have partnered with InterContinental Hotels Group to assess a solution that uses augmented and virtual reality to reinvent the event planning experience.
Accenture’s extended reality (XR) practice has developed the XR Event Planner solution in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, which will place event planners, buyers and hotel sales staff side-by-side in a virtual reconstruction of an event space, allowing them to remotely envision and configure the layout in real-time. Users have the option to modify room layouts, toggle between table and chair configurations, stage placement, decorations and lighting.
The solution addresses challenges within the meetings and events industry, which is a more than £250 billion annual market in the US alone. Currently, booking event spaces can be a slow and expensive task, requiring event planners to scout geographically distant locations. It can not only result in lost opportunities but also increased booking costs for both property owners, event planners and end buyers. Feedback from a focus group testing and market analysis, conducted by Accenture, showed that XR Event Planner could increase hotel revenue by up to 8%.
The pilot solution extends the traditional consumer digital journey from smartphone AR to a more immersive head worn device, including Nreal AR glasses and HTC Vive Focus Plus VR headsets – both powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Platform.
IDC’s latest Worldwide Augmented and Virtual Reality Spending Guide shows global spending on augmented reality and virtual reality is forecast to reach £14.5bn in 2020. The spending will be led by the commercial sectors.
