Arcade Shooter Rhythm N Bullets Now Available on Oculus App Lab
Facebook’s new initiative App Lab was unveiled last week and enables VR developers to upload their projects onto the Oculus Quest platform without having to resort to sideloading via SideQuest or going through Oculus Store’s stringent content curation policy. The initial announcement featured 12 titles. There is now a new addition in DB Creations’ Rhythm ‘n Bullets.
Rhythm ‘n Bullets was first launched in November 2020 for the PC VR headsets on Steam. It serves up a mix of rhythm action and arcade-style shoot ‘em up gameplay. Players in the game will control a starfighter in every hand in which they will be shooting at waves of enemies so as to protect a core.
Enemies will come attacking from all the sides and diving to the core in step with the soundtrack. For a user’s shots to inflict maximum damage, the shots must be timed to the beat while also grabbing power-ups to help with the task. The campaign features four themes that you can play through including a holiday forest, a future city with an 80s beat, a climatic Galaxy Zone space battle and a Japanese-inspired scene that features thumping electronic tunes. After the campaign, players can immerse themselves into the endless mode in order to get a high score on the global leaderboards.
As with other App Lab titles, you can access Rhythm ‘n Bullets in multiple ways as the title does not appear on Oculus Store. The simplest way to access the arcade shooter is by following this Oculus link or accessing it via SideQuest.
Rhythm ‘n Bullets is a premium title but there is a free demo on SideQuest that you can test. Oculus has already acknowledged that many of the titles on App Lab may have some bugs and other unknown issues due to the less stringent admissions procedure. However, Rhythm ‘n Bullets is already available on various storefronts such as Viveport, Steam and the Pico neo 2 and it should therefore be relatively stable.
The creator DB Creations is also planning to release additional content for Rhythm ‘n Bullets in the near future. Also under development are a fifth theme and a challenge mode.
It’s still early days and it isn’t apparent how frequently we are going to see App Lab title launches; whether they will come streaming in regularly as more virtual reality studios turn their gaze to the new distribution method or come sporadically.
