AT&T, Ericsson, Intel and Warner Bros team up for mixed reality Batman experience

MWC19 The upcoming MWC19 in Barcelona will evidently be a treat for DC Comics’ fans, as they will be able to witness Batman in action and fighting his nemesis The Scarecrow in mixed reality (MR).

The demonstration, which is a joint work between AT&T, Ericsson, Intel, Warner Bros., and DC, is a combination of VR and AR, coupled with 5G technology and edge computing. This show will run on a fully integrated 5G network, which is powered by Ericsson Radio Base Stations and enabled by Intel 5G Mobile Trial Platform and Intel Xeon Scalable processors.

The demos at the event are built upon a proof-of-concept demonstration that was organised in December 2018 on the University of Southern California (USC) campus in Los Angeles. The companies involved in this project provided students at the USC School of Cinematic Arts with an opportunity to experience a context-aware, mixed-reality experience designed by the USC’s 5G and edge computing-powered Mobile & Environmental Media Lab.

Kevin Zvokel, vice president, networks at Ericsson North America, said: “The low latency of 5G in combination with distributed cloud unlocks a world of possibilities in mixed reality, allowing for a more realistic and immersive entertainment experience.”

Earlier this month, Accenture, Qualcomm Technologies and Kellogg Company joined hands to develop and pilot the Accenture Extended Reality (XR) practice – a solution embedded with eye tracking technology in a mobile VR headset, which is set to reinvent performing market research and gathering of critical consumer data by companies, brands and retailers.
