Augmented Reality Photo App ‘ReplayAR’ Allow Local Time Travel
ReplayAR is a free augmented reality app that will save and store the physical places where you capture your visual memories (photos, illustrations, projects) and then project these memories when you visit the same place again at a later date. The app is built to allow users to time-travel back into the past whenever they bump into locations where they had captured some memories.
It’s a free app and is already available for download on the App Store for iOS devices. The memories are permanently frozen on location and the user will be able to experience them days, months or years later when they revisit the same location. The moment from the past is overlaid on the real world setting where the event took place.
When you shoot a photo, for example, the app will save and store the GPS coordinates of the place where the event takes place. When you return to the same location, the image that you captured will be superimposed on the real background of the setting and displayed as augmented reality on the exact spot where it was taken.
When you touch the digital photo that is on the smartphone display, the ReplayAR app will show you both the time and date when the photo was taken.
You can even share the photo so that other app users will be able to see the snapshots. The ReplayAR technology allows users to geocache their memories and see their personal experiences projected onto the locations where those events actually happened.
The app functionality is a combination of Instagram and Pokemon Go; it geo-attaches the AR images to specific locations in the real world such that the content that you create today could be even be seen by future generations, that is if the app will be available in perpetuity. It’s an interesting and futuristic way to time-travel.
The developers are imagining long-term uses for the app’s data collection and imaging tech that could range from architectural restoration to historical preservation, education, marketing, humanities, tourism, military intelligence and forensics.
The creators describe the app as an “open time capsule” that will be around us at all times. You could even use it to capture personal life stories such as that of your child growing up and playing at various points in the house and freeze these in a digital time-space where your kids will eventually be able to visualize the moments as they were a few years from now.
The ReplayAR app is still in its experimental phase. The team is currently working behind the scenes to expand the app into a global augmented reality social networking platform that will overlay the reality with the digitally stored moments of different users at different times. For the time being, the single-user version of the app will be available for the everyday user as the company collects feedback from early users on how it can leverage the technology in unique ways.
