Augmented Reality Startup Kwest Announces a Kickstarter Campaign and Livestream Event
The location-based augmented reality storytelling game Kwest has today announced the launched of a Kickstarter campaign for its AR platform. The campaign will be live at http://www.kwest.app/kickstarter. The startup celebrated the occasion with an all-day livestream event which was hosted at http://www.twitch.tv/kwestapp with DJs, special guests, product/player accessibility talks and much more. The guests at the livestream event included the Eisner award-winning artist Janet K Lee and Steve Spohn from AbleGamers. The “We Fix Space Junk” podcast team was also present during the event.
Kwest is an AR storytelling game that immerses users into real-world exploration through interesting episodic narrative adventures. Kwest wants to be the “Netflix” of location-based AR entertainment.
The game is both Android and iOS-compatible and has already seen a successful closed release where almost 4000 individual story scenes were played. 97% of players reported having positive experiences in the game.
The campaign is aiming to raise $40,000. Some of these funds will go into the Kickstarter fee and also cater for the cost of shipping and physical rewards. The rest of the funds will be solely directed towards the development and production of the mobile game. For the kind of virtual experience that Kwest is aiming for, this seems like a fairly modest budget.
Kwest will give users an opportunity to play as the main character in their favorite story worlds through an interactive narrative adventure where their city will be the setting. These story worlds can emanate from the player’s favorite shows, TV, books or movies among other narrative sources. Users can experience the compelling narrative that will be delivered through various content formats including music, voice and sound effects. In Kwest, the player can model their own unique outcomes through the choices that they make. The character in every story has been brought to life within their city streets via augmented reality.
Kwest has already had a great Closed Demo Release with more than 1500 downloads within one month and 80% of the users giving the game a rating of 4 or 5.
The team at Kwest is aiming to build a new Transmedia Storytelling Platform and to produce the first augmented reality storytelling experience to scale. Kwest plans to work with many entertainment partners in bringing these stories to life. It has already contacted some of the big names in entertainment such as Netflix, HBO and Nickelodeon. For now, the developers are focused in concluding the development project and taking it to the market either this year or the next.
Before the current Kickstarter campaign, the company had been fully bootstrapped and this will be the first time that it will be taking up external capital. The company says it could have forgone the external funding but its success as a transmedia platform is hinged on getting into the market first and with the best product possible.
Kwest is developing an innovative platform that will work with various content creators as well as media markets to promote the fast adoption of augmented reality and help steer the industry to the next frontier.
