Bigscreen Teams Up With Paramount Pictures for Ticketed VR Movie Screenings
VR startup Bigscreen has teamed up with Paramount Pictures to bring the movie theater experience to virtual reality headsets. Bigscreen will be showing some of the Paramount classics such as “Star Trek” and Interstellar in a VR movie theater in which participants will be able to share the movie watching experience with their friends.
Just like in the traditional movie theater, users won’t be bombarded with on-demand choices. Bisgscreen will instead screen 4 movies per week. The showings will begin every 30 minutes. Viewers will also be able to personalize their avatars, voice chat with other viewers and even hang out with another in the lobby.
The Bigscreen VR platform provides viewers with a new way to experience movies from the comfort of their homes. With the cutting-edge virtual reality technology, fans now have a new take on the traditional cinema experience.
Bigscreen has gone out of its way to make the experience feel just like the regular movie theater experience. Not only is the VR movie screening ticketed but fans will also have to pick their tickets to gain entrance into the virtual movie theater. Each of the films will cost between $4 and $5. The ticket sales for the virtual screenings will begin on Monday.
Bigscreen has a huge trump card when it comes to 3D movie screenings. Many of the traditional theaters have long screened blockbusters in 3D but cinema-goers still have very limited options for watching movies in the 3D format once the theatrical 3D run is over. A VR screening experience can therefore fill in the void in this regard.
Bigscreen will be showing some select titles from Paramount in 3D. The startup says the virtual screenings will be “better than in theaters” where there are usually only a few seats that offer viewers a “sweet spot” for the best 3D viewing experience. In virtual reality, the number of optimal front-row seats or places is pretty much unlimited.
Over the past few months, Bigscreen also experimented with free event viewing which saw moderate success, regularly attracting a viewership of 1000 people or more. The startup is planning to add more movies from other studios to its programming in the future. Bigscreen is also planning to add sports and news content to the virtual viewing experience.
Bigscreen’s ultimate aim is to be able to showcase movies very close to their theatrical release which will help attract more viewers who might have missed out on the theatrical releases.
The Paramount movies and Bigscreen Cinema will be available on a number of headsets including Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, Oculus Go, SteamVR, Valve Index, HTC Vive as well as all the Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality headsets. It will cover various markets including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands.
