Developer Showcases a Perfect Mixed Reality Apartment in Oculus Quest
Interaction designer Greg Madison has created a futuristic and immersive living environment. He lives in two apartments, a real one and a mixed reality apartment with each of them lying on top of the other and providing users with two layers of realities within which to eke out a living. The exciting mixed reality apartment living provides a window into potential mixed reality future where the immersive will merge with the real and XR technologies will permeate our lifestyles in a very organic way just as smartphones do so today.
Madison published a video on YouTube presenting his idea of a mixed reality apartment:
In the video, the XR developer can be seen walking through his real home while wearing an Oculus headset. He then interacts with the virtual apartment using the optical hand tracking of the virtual reality headsets. A table surface becomes an interactive Google Maps Card, digital music sheets hover above the keyboard while the armrest of a chair displays a menu through which the user can operate a virtual monitor that is floating in the room.
The digital reconstruction of the physical apartment took a lot of time and effort. The developer spent about 22 hours in the virtual duplicate of the apartment that he modeled piece by piece using Sketchup and then put the pieces together using Unity. The virtual copy of the apartment corresponds to the original to within two millimeters.
Next-Gen Virtual Reality Could be Mixed Reality
Madison’s vision of a mixed reality apartment is not too far from the future. The next-generation virtual reality headsets should be able to measure and reconstruct physical rooms through the use of integrated cameras and without having to rely on the manual 3D modeling in real time.
This is one of Facebook’s XR research aims; that of building virtual reality headsets that will have a very highly developed mixed reality functionality. These could be the intermediate step towards the realization of narrow augmented reality glasses. According to Facebook’s XR Research Director Michael Abrash, a breakthrough in this direction should suffice within the next few years.
The future possibilities are fascinating and with an affordable and accessible headset such as Oculus Quest, you can begin getting a glimpse of them. Oculus Quest provides a foretaste of how the future generations of virtual reality hardware will seamlessly mix the real and the virtual to create multidimensional spaces.
