Dissect Animals in Virtual Reality With ‘Dissection Simulator’
Here is a dissection experiment that is at least PETA-friendly.
A US-based XR startup VictoryXR believes dissection can also be done in virtual reality and has created a platform where learners can dissect various dead animals including cats, frogs and mice. The startup, which was founded in 2016, specializes in virtual reality and augmented reality education and has created the VR program ‘dissection simulator’
In Dissection Simulator, animal carcasses can be virtually dissected in virtual reality. This platform can lend itself easily to anatomy or biology education and could form the basis for training on dissection in both schools and universities.
VictoryXR has partnered with the U.S. company Carolina which has been providing scientific learning materials to learning institutions for the past 90 years. In addition to books and microscopes, the company has also been providing lots of living and preserved animals for learning purposes. Now, it seems, the company is setting its eyes on the technologies of the future: immersive technologies.
Can Digital Animals Beat the Real Carcasses?
Instead of delivering real carcasses of animals to be dissected, Carolina now provides a digital virtual reality training course from VictoryXR complete with instructions on how to achieve the “perfect cat section”. The usage license for the virtual reality learning material costs $200 per year.
In the description for Dissection Simulator, the companies are promising users an authentic section experience in the classroom that will be comparable to the dissection of a real cat.
In the real learning environment, students who do not wish to perform a real section for personal or religious reason could perform the virtual reality section. The virtual reality dissection also offers another key advantage: You can dissect even animals that you can’t easily procure in real life such as sharks.
Dissection Simulator can also incorporate a digital person that replaces the real flesh-and-blood teacher in real-life situations. In this case, according to developers, a digitized version of a licensed and professional science teacher can appear as a hologram and guide the students through the entire dissection process. The virtual reality training platform enables learning to take place anywhere and at any time.
VictoryXR software supports various virtual reality headsets including Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and the Windows Mixed Reality headset. Using this program requires a SteamVR installation. Additional information on the VR learning tool can be found on the VictoryXR official website.
The commercial version of the XR software is currently on sale on Steam as a ‘Dissection Simulator’.
