Doctor Who: The Edge Of Time VR Experience Introduces A New Creature To The Doctor Who Universe

The Doctor is trapped somewhere on the edge of time. A virus has been unleashed into the universe that will destroy all reality unless it’s stopped, and it’s up to you to make things right. But in order to save the universe, you’ll need to recover a series of powerful time crystals and save the Doctor from certain doom.
Doctor Who: The Edge of Time is a fully interactive feature-length VR experience that will take you on a time-traveling adventure deep into the eclectic and outlandish universe of BBC’s long-running sci-fi program, Doctor Who.
Developed by Maze Theory, a London based VR start-up in conjunction with BBC Studios, the team’s goal was to create an immersive gaming experience that could please hardcore Doctor Who fans, while at the same time appeal to newcomers with little prior knowledge of Doctor Who’s complex universe.
Armed with the Sonic Screwdriver, the Doctor’s signature tool-of-choice, you’ll solve puzzles, battle Daleks, and even go face-to-face with one of the show’s most terrifying creatures, the Weeping Angels, a race of horribly frightening statue-like monsters that only move whenever you blink or look away.
As scary as that sounds, the Weeping Angels will be the least of your worries throughout the visually-compelling experience. Doctor Who: The Edge of Time will introduce fans to never-before-seen carnivorous creatures called Hydrork, deadly beats that, according to the game’s creators, are guaranteed to send a shiver down your spine.
Based on the gameplay footage provided, it appears as though players are in for plenty of surprises and jump-scares, each of which takes full advantage of VR.
Thankfully, you won’t be alone on your adventure. Jodie Whittaker, the first ever female Time Lord, and current Doctor, will serve as your guide, communicating with you through multiple devices as a hologram and assisting you throughout your time-traveling adventure.
Oh, and did we mention that you’ll be able to pilot the TARDIS?
There are even a few opportunities to get up-close and personal with the Dalek, arguably the most recognizable villains from the Doctor Who universe. Walk up to a Dalek and even see your own reflection in its shiny metal plating, or just stand paralyzed in fear!
In an official press release, Maze Theory Creative Director, Marcus Moresby said, “Maze Theory is committed to redefining storytelling through awesome, innovative and immersive experiences in VR,” adding, “Doctor Who is an incredibly exciting and timeless franchise with a passionate and committed global fan base. We are looking to give them an entirely new experience; an opportunity to team up with the Doctor and feel like they are in the show.”
Doctor Who: The Edge of Time launches September 29th on PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift/ Rift S, HTC Vive, and Vive Cosmos.
This past April BBC debuted another Doctor Who VR experience,
Doctor Who: The Runaway at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. The 13-minute interactive journey follows the 13th Doctor on an intergalactic rescue mission to deliver an unstable ball of living energy to its home planet before it explodes. The animated adventure features a significantly more cartoonish look when compared to The Edge Of Time, which takes a much more realistic approach with its visuals.
