Dragon Quest Walk Provides a Fresh Take to Pokémon Go
In a press conference in Tokyo, Square Enix announced the new mobile game Dragon Quest Walk which is a new iteration of the wildly popular 33-year old JRPG series Dragon Quest. The new smartphone entry blends the monster-battling RPG mechanics of the series with the real-world location-based exploration gameplay seen in games such as Pokémon Go.
Not much has been divulged about the game so far but from the trailer, we can glean that this will be a location-based RPG where the monsters in the franchise will be brought to life in the real world via an augmented reality treatment just like in the Pokémon Go.
In the Tokyo conference, Square Enix demo’d the Dragon Quest Walk’s exploration of various real-world locales such as the Tokyo Tower and where players are engaged in combat against various creatures just like in the iconic series. In the cinematic trailer of the game, we can see various Dragon Quest beasts wandering in various locations including the Dotonbori River which is in Osaka, the busy Shibuya Crossing along with various picturesque rural locations.
Apart from the explorations, the Dragon Quest Walk also allows players to build and customize their houses and fill in the spaces with various slime-shaped furnishings and other decorative aspects in the series. Players can subsequently level up both their homes and characters.
Dragon Quest Walk will be released in beta in Japan even though the developers are yet to provide a concrete release date. Not much is known about any international release plans and given the mixed history of the spinoffs of the title making it out of Japan and into the international market, you may have to temper your expectations for a local version of the Dragon Quest Walk if you are based outside Japan.
