Excited for Facebook Connect on Wednesday? While surprises are expected the social media giant has gone and dropped a major leak today in the form of Oculus Quest 2, with a selection of videos featuring the headset viewable on Facebook Blueprint – its e-learning platform.
It’s not exactly a surprise reveal as there have been a number of leaks like the images which appeared in July. This is very different as these are official marketing videos which were likely to be used on Wednesday during the keynote. The content not only gives the best look at the new device but also reveals plenty of information about the hardware.
The video highlights the new ‘soft-touch strap’ for easy adjustment, there’s 6GB RAM inside combined with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 platform for more power than the original Oculus Quest. Facebook’s claims the new headset has an ‘almost 4K display’ and there will be a 256GB storage model available, although no prices are mentioned.
Another important detail that’s mentioned is that every Oculus Quest title will work with Oculus Quest 2, they’ll probably even look better thanks to the upgraded hardware. Qualcomm’s XR2 platform is being used for a range of upcoming devices such as augmented reality (AR) glasses Nreal Light and XR Viewers from companies including Panasonic. The platform should then allow developers to create even better VR experiences for standalone gaming.
There are still plenty of details yet to be revealed regarding the Oculus Quest 2 such as price, availability and what’s happening with IPD adjustment, so watching Facebook Connect should still be worth it. You’ll be able to view the event through VR app Venues as well as Facebook Live. That big hardware announcement isn’t going to have quite the same impact.
