Facebook Sold 2-3 Million Quest 2 Headsets in Q4 2020, ‘Rec Room’ Studio Estimates
Although Mark Zuckerberg has confirmed that Oculus Quest 2 headset performed impressively following its release last October, Facebook hasn’t divulged any solid sales data. All we have had so far is anecdotal information gleaned from app sales and developer statements on the performance of their apps following Quest 2 release. Now the studio behind Rec Room is providing an estimate based on app downloads stats following the release of the headset.
Rec Room is a free social VR app that is also one of the most popular out there. The performance of this app over a specific time duration can therefore serve as a rough yardstick on the general trends in the industry. According to the studio behind Rec Room, Facebook might have sold anywhere between 2 and 3 million Quest 2 headsets in the 2020 Q4 alone, based on Rec Room downloads over the same time duration. According to Rec Room’s Shawn Whiting, the app’s download figures give a ballpark figure of anywhere between 2 and 3 million Quest 2 headsets sold between the launch of the headset in October and the end of the year.
Should the 40% attach rate be accurate, then the figure should stand at roughly 2.5 million Oculus Quest 2 headsets sold before the start of 2021. Even if we suppose a 100% Rec Room attach rate, a million virtual reality headsets sold in a month is an impressive industry performance. This would make the Quest 2 the fastest-selling headset so far.
In his investor briefings, Zuckerberg has always downplayed Facebook’s XR projects, describing its VR and AR efforts and aspirations as long-term investments. Facebook is unlikely to release any solid data on hardware sales until it has a future product within reach but in the company’s last earnings call, Zuckerberg stated that the Quest 2 headset was on track to becoming the “first mainstream virtual reality headset.”
Mark Zuckerberg’s definition of “mainstream” isn’t clear-cut. At the Oculus Connect 5 in 2018, he had stated that 10 million virtual reality users is an important milestone for Facebook to build a sustainable ecosystem for virtual reality developers. Facebook is probably not close to this milestone but if it unveils another successful product launch that replicates the Quest 2 success, it may well be on its point to meet its self-defined critical milestone that could herald the long-awaited mainstream breakthrough for virtual reality.
