Fresh Details About Meta’s Project Cambria Headset Coming Out Today
Meta will be revealing details of its high-powered standalone VR headset Project Cambria later today.
Mark Zuckerberg shared this on his Facebook page stating that Cambria’s color passthrough technology will allow developers to create “a whole new level of mixed reality experiences” and announcing that more details of the headset will be unveiled later today. Zuckerberg’s post was accompanied by a slightly blurred image of the Meta boss wearing the headset while using some hand tracking features.
The details are likely to be mainly to do with Project Cambria’s color passthrough capabilities. It is also possible that Zuckerberg could reveal even more details about the headset.
The headset’s name “Cambria” is just a codename. The headset was unveiled at the 2021 Connect conference. It is said to be a high-end alternative to Meta’s popular Quest headsets, millions of which have been shipped to consumers across the world.
Apart from its color passthrough functionality, the headset also features face and eye-tracking to enable users to experience more emotive social VR avatars. The form factor of the headset has also been revised and it now features a new lens type.
Project Cambria will be launched later in the year although Meta is yet to divulge the release date or the headset’s price. It remains to be seen just how much Meta will divulge today.
Project Cambria will be compatible with Quest but, as the company has emphasized, this headset isn’t part of its Quest line. Last week, Meta said that the headset was designed more for immersive workplace uses than for gaming which might imply that the pricing is likely to be on the higher end and outside the average consumer’s range. Meta said it expects the headset to even replace laptops and usher in a new era of computing. Early this month, the company also clarified that the price of the Project Cambria headset will be “significantly higher” price than $800 following a report by The Information that the headset would cost less. According to data from import logs, the headset will have a RAM of 12GB.
