The new headsets will be rebranded as Meta and will not carry the Oculus brand name. Meta is also expecting to sell millions of these headsets with one leak indicating that the company is targeting sales of up to 3 million units within the first year.
This year might shape up into a busy one for VR hardware with Apple’s AR/VR headset also expected to arrive this year.
XR hardware analyst Brad Lynch says the two Meta VR headsets will be very different. Project Cambria, or rather, the Quest Pro will include miniLED displays. Mark Zuckerberg has recently described pancake optics capable of delivering high resolutions in relatively thin displays and we expect the Quest Pro to be thin with a very small form factor.
The Meta Quest 3 that is arriving in 2023 will feature small OLED displays and might be the first VR headset to use microOLED displays in the actual product. The microOLED displays are the latest iteration of the OLED technology. Lynch says the Meta Quest 3 will be launched during the Meta Connect in September 2023.
The Lynch report also states that Meta will not be using Snapdragon XR3 in its new hardware and will, instead, build its own silicon chips for the headsets. There are also reports that Meta has shelved its plans to build its own AR/VR operating system and is opting to modify Android. The Apple headset, on the other hand, will run an Apple operating system on an Apple chip just like its other products- iPad, iPhone, and MacBooks.
