‘Horizon Home’ Social Spaces Announced For Oculus Quest 2
Design your own virtual home and invite your friends to hang out, watch videos, or party up before a game.
Facebook today unveiled Horizon Home, a custom social space where you can invite friends to hang out and watch videos before jumping into an experience. Launching soon on Oculus Quest 2 headsets, Horizon Home will serve as your personal home in the company’s continually-growing metaverse. At the moment, Quest players are able to choose from a variety of unique environments, from a cozy mountain cabin to a cyberpunk apartment. Horizon Home takes this feature to the next level.
As previously mentioned, Horizon Home allows you to invite other players over to your home to chat or kick back and watch a few videos. This is an excellent way to party up with friends before hopping into a game, which should, hopefully, simplify the current party-making system.According to Facebook, you’ll eventually have the ability to build and customize your own Horizon Home, though details are light at the moment. The company has also announced that it will be introducing Facebook Messenger audio calls later this year, allowing for easier cross-platform communication.
In addition to Horizon Home, Facebook highlighted several other updates heading to the Oculus Quest 2, including support for a wider range of 2D apps. Not too long ago the company introduced multitasking, allowing you to interact with multiple 2D apps from your headset simultaneously.
Today, Facebook announced the arrival of several major apps, including Facebook, Instagram, Smartsheet, and Spike. Moving forward, the company plans on introducing additional apps such as Dropbox, Monday.com, MURAL, My5 (UK), PlutoTV, and Slack. By embracing the Progressive Web App industry standard, Facebook hopes to encourage other developers to port their programs to the Quest platform.
With Horizon Home, Facebook continues to lay the groundwork for its developing VR metaverse, which currently consists of Horizon Home, Horizon Worlds, and Horizon Venues (formerly Venues). To celebrate the launch, Facebook has released a new personal workspace environment. There are a bunch of Horizon Homes available now. You’ll also have the ability to create your own in the future.
