HTC Viveport Store is Coming to Windows Mixed Reality Headsets
The Viveport subscription service, the Netflix of VR, is opening up to new platforms in its bid to create an agnostic software platform that will offer cross-platform compatibility across the virtual reality sphere. In the latest development, HTC has announced that its Viveport and Viveport Infinity platforms will now be compatible with the Windows Mixed Reality devices.
HTC’s Viveport store is a curated library which contains more than 1,700 virtual reality experiences. The Viveport Infinity subscription service, on the other hand, contains some 600 virtual reality titles that can be accessed on your headset after paying a subscription fee. Viveport offers a neutral platform where you can experience a vast spectrum of virtual reality games and apps at a very low subscription fee.
The new offering is sure to make the Windows Mixed Reality headsets more attractive for gamers. The Viveport subscription service will begin offering support for the Windows Mixed Reality headsets from June 5.
The Viveport store as well as the subscription service contains games that have been developed by HTC. The portal was initially available on the HTC Vive headsets. With time, it added new games that were compatible with the Oculus Rift headset. Now it will be opening the platform to the Windows Mixed Reality headset, allowing owners of the cheap headsets to download any compatible games.
The Windows Mixed Reality virtual reality platform was developed by Microsoft and was integrated into Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system. Since then, several hardware manufacturers such as Samsung, HP, Lenovo and Dell have launched Mixed Reality headsets. The headsets have the advantage of low cost as well as the ease of installation. Their affordability makes them a great alternative for some of the mid-spec and mid-priced headsets such as the Vive and Oculus Rift.
The gaming capability of the Mixed Reality headsets has also grown considerably thanks to Steam VR support. With the extension of the Viveport support, these headsets will now have access to an even bigger portfolio of virtual reality titles. If you are looking for an affordable PC VR headset with great offering, the Windows Mixed Reality is now offering a great choice. The addition of Windows Mixed Reality headset also completes the lineup of the PC-tethered virtual reality headsets that will be leveraging on the Viveport Infinity platform. The Rift S and Valve Index will be joining the lineup later this summer.
However, in spite of the affordability, the headset hasn’t had as much success as its key competitors which have also upgraded their portfolio in the recent years. Some are even questioning whether the headset even has a future. The Viveport support might inject some fresh life into Windows Mixed Reality family of HMDs which is slowly being edged out by more agile competitors.
