Hyundai Debuts World’s First Holographic Augmented Reality Navigation System
Imagine driving around with the navigational information displayed through your windshield and onto the road in augmented reality. Modern cars are equipped with navigational aids but that often means you have to look down at a screen in your vehicle’s console to get directions while driving.
That will no longer be the case with Hyundai’s futuristic head-up display for cars which was recently unveiled at the CES 2019. The Hyundai existing AR Navigational System displays various types of navigational alerts such as the directions and the safety warnings that typically appear on the vehicle’s console in the dashboard on the vehicle’s windshield. Instead, with the holographic AR navigation system, this information will be overlaid onto the roadway, in front of the driver’s eyes. This vastly improves drivers’ performance, the road safety and adds a good deal of convenience and comfort to the driving experience.
It is the world’s first Holographic Augmented Reality Navigation System and was developed by the automaker in collaboration with the Swiss deep-tech startup WayRay AG. The navigational system display appears in the vehicle’s windshield alongside the automaker’s existing HUD system.
It’s a safety technology that’s designed to offer drivers navigational and ADAS features that will radically boost the in-car experiences. The technology projects varied information on the roadway including the stereoscopic guidance icons and various navigational alerts. For example, instead of looking at the dashboard, you will now be able to get information such as the vehicle speed on the glass of your vehicle’s windshield.
However, it doesn’t work like the conventional augmented reality heads-up displays (HUD) available in Hyundai and other car brands. Instead, the Holographic AR display will make the projected navigational information appear as if it is on the roadway in front of the driver and the display will be adjusted appropriately to correspond with the driver’s viewing angle.
As a result, the holographic augmented reality display is more accurate than the conventional heads-up displays which project reflected images via a screen on the vehicle’s dashboard. The holographic display is different in the fact that it projects the images through the windshield as opposed to on the windshield like HUDs. Additionally, Hyundai’s holographic AR display will not require that the driver wear an AR headset. They will be able to see the projected information through the windshield while still keeping an eye on the road.
During the CES 2019, the AR system’s features showcased were mainly navigational and included destination points, information on lane guidance and the current speed all of which will be shown in augmented reality. The system will also display safety features such as forward collision and lane departure warnings.
Hyundai and WayRay are planning to scale up the system in the future so as to display additional information such as pedestrians, bicycle lanes, buses, objects and crosswalks. The system will also incorporate more safety features for the drivers such as the Highway Driving Assist (HDA) system along with the rear side warning system. The two companies are also planning to leverage vehicle-to-everything technology and add traffic signals, road conditions, weather conditions and surrounding vehicle information into the augmented reality environment. In the future, Hyundai’s holographic augmented reality system will be a lot more sophisticated.
This latest development is part of the wider scale augmented reality transformation that is currently taking place in the automotive sector. Many of the world’s leading automakers are rapidly adopting AR-driven solutions in the manufacturing and driving experience in order to obtain a competitive edge. The customer-centric solutions are not only taking the in-vehicle entertainment to the next level but also creating a safe and more comfortable driving experience.
