Indie Duo Sandglass Games to Release Sci-fi Adventure Orbital Strike VR Fall 2020
With Gamescom Now starting tomorrow expect to see an influx of videogame announcements as developers prep for the festive season. Before that, indie studio Sandglass Games has announced its second virtual reality (VR) title which is due for launch this year, Orbital Strike VR.
Way back in 2016 Sandglass Games released Orbital Strike: Arena as team-based, online shooter for the HTC Vive. With Orbital Strike VR it’s continuing the franchise whilst also creating a spiritual successor to an older mobile videogame called Embserol Mercenaries.
Offering both solo and co-op gameplay modes, Orbital Strike VR is a combination of zero-g first-person combat with space-sim fleet battles. Rather than commanding giant ships from the cockpit, you’ll find yourself outside in the dark void of space with hand jets to manoeuvre around.
Combat involves a number of mechanics, handheld weapons help to quickly disperse enemy formations, fire support ships can be built and fleet assets can be directed to destroy opponents; all with or without a teammate. With a heavy strategic element, you can take ships and customise the chassis, weapons and other components to tailor your fleet. Resources gained can be used to build space stations, helping defend key areas whilst enabling fleet upgrades.
You do all of this whilst flying through space, directly and indirectly dealing with enemies across the Starfall Campaign. Encounters also scale depending on whether you’re playing solo or in co-op.
Sandglass Games is made up of development duo Bart Gunderman and Victor Libran, who’ve been working on Orbital Strike VR for the past 3 years. “As a small 2-person team, we are releasing Orbital Strike VR as a shorter, more polished title,” they’ve said in a statement.
The project is slated to arrive ‘Fall 2020’, supporting Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Valve Index headsets. Check out the trailer below and for further updates on Orbital Strike VR, keep reading VRFocus.
