Israeli Company Elbit Systems Unveils X-Sight Helicopter Pilot Helmet
Technology company Elbit Systems unveiled its helicopter vision suite for military helicopters last week. The technology uses a mix of machine learning, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence to give pilots better visibility when flying in degraded visibility conditions.
The company says the system is powerful and enables pilots to actually “see” through the aircraft when flying.
The platform consists of three components: an array of sensor systems, an AR head-mounted display (HMD), and an AI-powered mission computer. Its sensor array includes the Xplore radar as well as BrightNite multispectral payload which has day and Infra-Red cameras for thermal vision.
The sensors are attached to the aircraft’s nose and it is these that generate the virtual map of the local terrain, including the obstacles like powerlines and antennas. They transmit this information to the AI-powered mission computer and this combines with mission data and pre-installed maps before being displayed on the visor of Elbit’s X-Sight HMD.
When pilots are navigating through their flight route, the system’s AR overlay will display critical information over the virtual map in real-time. The information displayed includes threats to the critical flight, potential obstacles, and mission information. The system even allows pilots to switch between various modes like day and night flight, collision alert, landing pad analysis, and obstacle mapping among others.
Elbit Systems says the immersive helicopter vision suite will enable pilots to perform optimally in poor conditions. Elbit says the system enables pilots to “see through the body of the aircraft” and “own the weather” by providing them with a real-time, clear and colored field of view at all times when they are flying in poor weather and poor visibility conditions.
In an official release, the company says that the capabilities of its helicopter vision suite will help pilots solve one of the toughest operational challenges faced by military helicopters: performing low-altitude flights in degraded visibility conditions. Elbit Systems says the suite will also expand the operational envelope of military helicopters and will give pilots an operational advantage in extreme weather as well as in other degraded visibility conditions.
