Leaked Samsung Neon Video Gives a Peek into What Artificial Humans Look Like
A new leaked Samsung video provides us with a glimpse into its mysterious ‘artificial human’ or Neon technology in action. The discovery was made by a Reddit user who found the source code on the Neon website.
Samsung is set to showcase the project Neon during the CES 2020 tomorrow. It entails realistic human avatars which can be put into various uses including entertainment and business use-case scenarios where the artificial humans could act as receptionists, guides and much more.
The artificial human project has now been confirmed by the leaked videos as well as a tweet from one of the project leads. However, questions still linger regarding the project so it is still hard to determine just how impressive the artificial human will be. We don’t know, for instance, whether the characters that were shown in the video are real people that have been generated and animated purely by artificial intelligence and other computer technologies or whether they are simply motion capture recreations. From the video, it is also not clear what Neon actually is.

The Neon lead who tweeted the image is the computer-human interaction researcher Paranav Mistry. The image shows one of the avatars in the project. According to Mistry, Neon’s Core R3 technology has the capacity to “autonomously create new expressions, new movements, new dialog (even in Hindi)”. It is capable of creating this, totally independent of original captured data.
In the unlisted videos which were stripped from the source code found on Neon’s home page, you will see more of the similar human figures. These videos were first posted on Reddit but they have since been taken down. Check them out on the YouTube video below. From the images, you can see the human figures from project Neon look very lifelike. They look like normal videos of real people rather than computer-generated graphics; which is quite creepy!
For now, it is still unclear to what extent these images have been computer-generated. It is not known if they are simply derived from high-fidelity video-capture that have been animated by computer technology after the fact. It is also known how naturally these avatars talk and emote; do they do it exactly like humans or there is some drag or lag somewhere that reveals they have been computer generated? The Neon team has claimed that the avatars are so lifelike that they can easily be mistaken for real humans. Should that prove to be the case, it would represent a major technological leap.
Mistry believes these “digital humans” will be a major technological feature in the 2020s. The digital human or virtual humans are going to be reality as we head into this decade and it will be interesting to watch what space they will occupy in our worlds and how we will interact with them. It is not far-fetched to imagine that these digital humans will eventually become a part of our lives. For example, we could have virtual TV anchors, virtual receptionists or even movie stars that have been artificially generated using AI.
For the time being, it’s a wait and see to determine whether the Neon avatars have made the digital human a reality. It won’t be long as Neon will be showcased at the CES 2020 in under 24 hours.
