Legendary Festival Burning Man is Coming to Somnium Space

What would have been almost unthinkable 12 months ago is now becoming commonplace, big events and festivals going digital because the real ones have had to be cancelled. There have been numerous examples of this, from the Game Developers Conference (GDC) to Lost Horizon and Venice VR Expanded. Another being added to that list is Burning Man, with an event to be held next week inside Somnium Space.

Called Take Me to Your Burn, the virtual Burning Man event inside Somnium Space will be just like the real thing – without all the desert sand and heat – a collaborative experience with artists, musicians, labels and more, plus of course the iconic Burning Man statue at the centre.

There’s going to be a massive amount of content for attendees to enjoy, both in virtual reality (VR) and via desktop. Over 40 artists will be showcasing installations and various artworks across 30 odd galleries or if you’re not bothered about the art 150+ DJ’s are going to play across 5 stages. Sets will be streamed live and on-demand from within Somnium Space via Twitch and YouTube.

Adding to that musical lineup will be over 30 bands playing live on the main stage with an open mic stage for solo musicians. Plus four special stages and installations will feature more than 20 workshops and lectures covering topics like spirituality, eco-living, health and fitness.

The Take Me to Your Burn digital festival will take place between 31st August to 7th September 2020. To experience the event you can either download Somnium Space via Steam for free – whether you have a VR headset or not – or head to the festival’s official website. The site will contain all the live streams, on-demand videos, chat rooms, event timetables and other information.

Ideally though, you’ll want a PC VR headset like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or Valve Index for the best experience, as that’s how Somnium Space has been designed. The persistent virtual world arrived in 2018 by selling digital land to users which could then be built upon. Version 2.0 launched earlier this year, improving features such as avatar creation whilst adding its own in-game currency called Somnium Cubes.
