LEGO and Epic Games are Building a Metaverse for Ages 4-99
Today, the LEGO group have announced a partnership with Epic Games to construct a metaverse aimed at children – though we’re sure adults can play too. The two companies are coming together to build a safe and family-friendly environment; the metaverse will be a fully immersive and “creatively inspiring” digital space for all kids to enjoy.
Talking on the partnership is Niels B Christiansen, CEO of the LEGO group, “Kids enjoy playing in digital and physical worlds and move seamlessly between the two. We believe there is huge potential for them to develop life-long skills such as creativity, collaboration and communication through digital experiences. But we have a responsibility to make them safe, inspiring and beneficial for all.”
The partnership is a match made in plastic building heaven. With the expertise of the LEGO group, paired with Epic Games, this metaverse is sure to be appealing. Epic obviously know a thing or two about marketing their games to children, so this is sure to be a force to be reckoned with.
Speaking on behalf of Epic Games, CEO Tim Sweeney, a huge supporter of the metaverse as a concept, speaks on the project, “The LEGO Group has captivated the imagination of children and adults through creative play for nearly a century, and we are excited to come together to build a space in the metaverse that’s fun, entertaining, and made for kids and families.”
Epic Games are planning plenty of age-appropriate experiences with SuperAwesome, who they acquired back in 2020. SuperAwesome are pioneers for creating fun and exciting experiences for those under the age of sixteen.
The LEGO Group and Epic Games have agreed to three principles which will ensure the digital spaces they develop deliver engaging play opportunities safely:
- Protect children’s right to play by making safety and wellbeing a priority.
- Safeguard children’s privacy by putting their best interests first.
- Empower children and adults with tools that give them control over their digital experience.
This is sure to win over both kids and parents when it is fully realised, and we wouldn’t be surprised if we see plenty of LEGO skins appear in Fortnite in the near future. LEGO are no strangers to videogame crossovers, so expect big things on the horizon.
