Location-Based VR Startup Nomadic Expands into Asia
After reporting much success with its location-based VR entertainment center in the US, Nomadic is now spreading its wings into the international market by opening its virtual reality arcade outside the US, to be based in Seoul, South Korea later this month.
The California-based VR startup has lofty ambitions to become a mixed reality powerhouse through its location-based offering. Mixed reality brings together digital VR entertainment with physical locations that provide lots of fun and entertainment in their own right. The company has partnered with Vertigo games to bring the hit virtual reality title Arizona Sunshine to Nomadic locations worldwide. This was Nomadic first ever turn-key partnership that enabled it to tap into Vertigo’s expertise in VR games development for its fast-growing modular virtual reality centers across the US and now, across the globe.
The company uses a combination of VR and the physical including set design, props as well as environment effects to create story-driven game-like VR content that blurs the line between the “virtual” and “reality”. Its experiences engage the guests as they get into the action.
The new Seoul location will be in the CGV Gangbyeon multiplex and Nomadic will be opening this in partnership with the theater chain CGV along with the tech provider CJ 4DX. Expansion into the Asian market was inevitable given the vibrant gaming culture in the continent, particularly in Korea, which augers well for Nomadic’s growth.
Nomadic is currently one of the few startups that combine virtual reality with very elaborate stage setups that include moving platforms, working doors as well as planks in some instances just to provide the balance.
Nomadic opened its first permanent location in Florida last fall with its second domestic location set to launch in Las Vegas in early 2020.
The company’s new Seoul location will host the “Arizona Sunshine: Contagion Z” which is a location-based version of the popular zombie shooter VR title “Arizona Sunshine”. The game is played by four players simultaneously. Late last year, Nomadic had also announced that it was collaborating with Paramount and Vrwerx on a “Mission Impossible” experience.
Nomadic’s new location in Seoul will be based on the 10th floor of the TechnoMart building and the venue will cover up to 2000 square-feet of space which will include a gear-up room, reception space as well as the play-space. During launch, this will offer guests Arizona Sunshine: Contagion Z, a location-based VR experience that Nomadic developed in partnership with Vertigo Games.
Nomadic’s move to open the VR space in Seoul also includes a distribution agreement with 4DX which the company could leverage to deepen its footprint in the South Korean market. For the immediate future, Nomadic will focus on its single location in Seoul.
