Lynx R1: First Standalone Mixed Reality Headset Announced
The stealth French startup LYNX has announced planned to launched its first mixed reality (XR) device on February 3rd. Known as Lynx R1, this will be the first standalone headset that has both VR and AR capabilities.
LYNX CEO Stan Larroque made the announcement yesterday via a Twitter update.

The mixed reality headset will be unveiled on February 3rd 2.30PM PT at the SPIE Photonics West conference to be held in San Francisco. The event will be broadcast live online so viewers will be able to watch the unveil via the livestream.
The LYNX CEO described the headset as a “standalone” device and one that has both AR and VR capabilities. The company’s website is promising users “innovations in optics, hardware, and ergonomics that will open amazing opportunities all industries”. The description on the website seem to describe a device that will be more technically- as well as price-oriented towards enterprise users than consumers.
The teaser image revealed so far along with some details from LYNX employees suggest that the augmented reality (AR) functionality in the headset will be available through a pass-through video.
The Lynx R1 headset should be able to provide users with an augmented reality functionality via the camera view. Two cameras embedded in the front part of headset casing should film the wearer’s surroundings and then stream this image to the displays in real-time where they can subsequently be expanded with digital elements. We still have to wait until the official reveal next week to get the official confirmations from the company.
The French startup has so far been very secretive. Road to VR reports that employs anywhere between 11 and 50 employees according to information on its LinkedIn profile. The startup’s website, however, lists only six employees. One of them is Marc Piuzzi who previously worked for StarVR for two years, building an ultrawide FOV VR headset before quitting in late 2018. He joined Lynx in June last year, according to details on his LinkedIn profile.
The immersive industry has had instances when a totally obscure company emerges out of nowhere and upsets the industry with some cutting-edge innovations. By revealing its headset at the SPIE Electronics West, a very technically-focused conference, Lynx is showing that it has the confidence to be a disruptive force in the industry.
