Magic Leap Unveils Magicverse SDK
Magic Leap has released the Magicverse SDK which has XR kits for iOS Android and Unreal. The Magicverse has been designed to combine physical with digital reality. The software is now open for developers.
Magic Leap has published the technical preview of the developer interface (SDK) for its Magicverse. Magicverse is Magic Leap’s colorful phrase for its augmented reality cloud where digital objects can be anchored visually as well as in 3D at fixed points. It’s a shared digital world which is overlaid on the real one. The content that has been anchored in the AR cloud can be seen by all the users that are connected to the augmented reality cloud. With the release of the early version of the Magic Leap SDK for developers this week, this shared AR Cloud is edging closer to reality.
The Magicverse has the potential to create a massive new digital infrastructure should AR go mainstream in the future. Instead of printing physical posters for display at certain points, future advertisers could, for example, simply digitally anchor them on walls or roads in the Magicverse where they can be seen by all users wearing and walking around with AR glasses.
Magic Leap has pivoted towards the enterprise as well as towards the wholesome development of its AR system following the disappointing performance of its AR hardware over the past few years. The dismal performance may also have stunted the company’s grand ambitions to build AR hardware.
The technical preview of the Magicverse SDK that the company released this week will allow developers to provide location-synchronized content that cuts across multiple platforms through Magic Leap’s spatial maps as well as the persistent coordinate frames provided end users will have access to a shared cloud or real-time multi-user networking. Users that have mobile devices such as iPads, iPhones and Android-based phones will be able to view the digital content that has been stored within the Magicverse. Magic Leap has said that the mobile devices will need to be held in a landscape orientation in order to localize in augmented reality.
Magic Leap wants Magicverse to offer an underlying digital layer or digital layers in which users in real or the virtual world will be able to experience content together. For example, visitors to a shopping mall will be able to view the same AR-displayed digital signage outside or use the Magicverse to find the same digital items or promotions inside the mall irrespective of whether they will be wearing the Magic Leap glasses or using other hardware. It should be hardware-agnostic.
Magic Leap is also anticipating that the Magicverse SDK will enable users, whether they are “physically present, digitally co-present or both” to discover and also interact with the experiences and content which has been stored digitally in specific locations.
The Magicverse digital mirror world is the basis for an advanced augmented reality. Apart from Magic Leap, companies such as Facebook, Google and Niantic are also investing in corresponding AR Clouds. Several startups are also working on the technology for this Augmented Reality infrastructure.
Magic Leap Will Start with Multi-User AR
Magic Leap is currently in the process of rolling out the first version of the multi-user AR software for both Unity and Unreal. Developers will have access to the tools and documents which they need to program the Magicverse apps for iOS, Android and Magic Leap 1.
The “Pancake Pals” app for Magic Leap 1 showcases the multi-user function although the app is still not compatible with mobile devices.
At the moment, Magic Leap is providing separate XR kits for iOS, Android, Unity, MagicScript and the Unreal Engine. The Android and MagicScript kits do not have documentation at the moment. Registered developers can download the kits for free from the Magic Leap Developer site. The Magic Leap 1 AR glasses cost from $2,295 and the price climbs to $2,995 for various bundles.
