Mario Kart: Live AR Racing Now Available On Nintendo Switch
Turn your home into a chaotic race track with this unique RC car experience.
Today marks the launch of Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, a brand new kart racing game that combines augmented reality technology with conventional RC cars to offer one of the most unique racing experiences in recent memory. Available now on the Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart Live has players steering remote-controlled vehicles through custom race tracks in a Mario Kart-inspired arcade racing experience. Each RC car is mounted with an AR-enabled camera, allowing drivers to view the action from a “third-person” perspective in real-time.
Each copy of Mario Kart Live comes with one RC car (Mario or Luigi) plus a USB charging cable, four gates, and two arrow signboards. These gates can be set up anywhere within the recommended 12’ x 10’ playspace, allowing you to build your own unique courses based on your location. Here you can partake in 24 different races across eight cups in “Grand Prix” mode, or battle up to three other players via local multiplayer. Each environment, whether it be underwater, volcanic, or retro, offers its own unique challenges to complete and hazards to overcome.
Alongside Grand Prix comes three additional game modes: Custom Race, Time Attack, and Mirror Mode. Custom Race allows you to customize the layout of your course, including its hazards, items, and other interactive elements for a one-of-a-kind race. Time Attack lets you create a track and then race against fellow players for the honor of the fastest time. Finally, there’s Mirror Mode, which allows you to play the mirror image of each of the Grand Prix cups; left becomes right, right becomes left, etc.
As previously stated, Mario Kart Live features gameplay heavily-inspired by the original Mario Kart formula. As you race you’ll have the ability to pick up useful items scattered around each course. Use the Mushrooms to trigger a burst of speed; toss a Red Shell at a fellow racer to send them spinning out. You’ll also have the chance to purchase digital costumes and kart types by collecting coins located throughout each track.
“Get your engines revved up for Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, which launches just in time for the holidays,” said Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, in an official release. “Whether you’ve always dreamed of turning your living room into Rainbow Road or want to prove once and for all that you’re the fastest racer among your friends and family, we hope this new Mario Kart experience brings smiles to people of all ages.”
Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is available now for $99 per game/RC car.
