Microsoft Flight Simulator Performance Update to Positively Impact VR Support
A soon-to-be-released Microsoft Flight Simulator Update could have a massive positive impact on the game’s performance in virtual reality (VR).
The developer Asobo integrated virtual reality support into the flight sim last year and the implementation was excellent. However, adding virtual reality support into a game that was already very demanding resource-wise pushed many rigs to the limit.
With the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator VR Performance Update, the Sim Update 5, there will be a performance overhaul for the Microsoft Flight Simulator that should give many rigs a massive boost. Asobo showcased its latest work in a recent livestream (from the 8-minute mark) which showed a demo of the game’s current version running on an RTX 2060 Super that is equipped with an Intel i7-9700K processor.
The game’s current build achieves 35 to 40 frames per second on Ultra settings. The game is now able to achieve between 55 and 60 frames per second (fps) with the Sim Update 5 running on the same machine and in the same part of the world. This is for the Ultra settings showing in 4K which still puts a lot of demand on the specs.
According to Asobo team’s Sebastian Wloch, the team rewrote large parts of the engine architecture or improved it so as to get the maximum performance out of the sim as well as minimum resource from the memory and bandwidth footprint.
With regard to VR support, the team says there’s definitely “going to be a positive impact on VR” but they “just don’t know exactly how much yet”. It could be the same or more than what was showcased but the impact on VR support will also depend on the virtual reality headset as well as on the GPU and CPU deployed and according to Wloch, it “should definitely be better.”
Because the PC market is fractured, Wloch admitted that he can’t guarantee that everyone will get the improved framerate but the team remains hopeful that it will see a big boost to the performance of the game in virtual reality.
The Sim Update 5 is set to launch on July 27. The game arrives on Xbox consoles on the same day. Keep it here for any updates on the expected performance improvements from the game.
