Microsoft Flight Simulator to Be Released in August Without VR Mode
The next-generation Microsoft Flight Simulator will not initially support virtual reality at launch; it is now confirmed.
The Microsoft Flight Simulator would make the perfect candidate for Virtual Reality support thanks to the genre, providing flight simulation in an immersive and realistic environment. Yet, Microsoft has now announced that the Flight Simulator will be released on August 18 and initially without the VR mode.
There was no official confirmation on whether the flight simulation will be upgraded with virtual reality in the future. A new trailer for the pre-order start is already available.
When the Microsoft Flight Simulator was unveiled at the E3 2019 in June, it was quickly apparent that the studio had not fully committed itself to supporting VR headsets during the launch. It is now clear that VR support will not be materializing at launch in August.
A new FAQ posted on the official Discord channel of the game stated that while virtual reality support is still unconfirmed, it remained a “top wish list item post-launch” for the developers. This is however an area of the Discord channel which is maintained by the fans and is referencing earlier statements that were made by developers.
Microsoft has yet to comment on virtual reality in the recent months so it is probably unlikely that the new Xbox will become a VR console. The VR mode for the Microsoft Flight Simulator is also a very shaky prospect.
The Microsoft Flight Simulator uses very high-resolution landscape images which have been pulled from Microsoft’s online map service Bing Maps. Using Microsoft’s Azure cloud, it generates lifelike 3D landscapes which are quite impressive. It also simulates the current weather conditions in real-time.
The Google Earth VR is the other large VR world simulation and enables you to fly over the globe with the touch of a finger and does not include an airplane mode. There are other VR flight sims such as Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) and VTOL VR. These were developed from ground up for virtual reality.
