Microsoft Might be Playing a Waiting Game Before Challenging Sony with Next-Gen VR
Sony Playstation VR currently enjoys unparalleled dominance in the consoles market and is regarded by users as the top VR bundle but stiff competition might be in the offing. The battle to dominate the next-gen virtual reality consoles market is bound to hit up in the future and Microsoft may be playing a waiting game before going for the next-gen devices that will compete with Sony.
PSVR is also not also keen on maintaining a competitive edge. Sony wants to minimize the consoles market and is planning to continue support for VR.
From a consumer standpoint, it’s an end of an era for Xbox One and PS4 as they gradually exit the market and make way for newer and more robust next generation consoles. This is also happening at a time when Sony is planning on releasing high-profile titles such as the Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us 2 and Death Stranding.
These titles will debut in the market at a time when the industry is ushering in next generation tech that will see major hardware changes. Sony is also planning some major revisions on the PSVR with the PSVR2.
Amidst these turbulent changes, Microsoft may be planning to give its Sony rival a run for its money with its Xbox Scarlett hardware. Details about this are still fuzzy as there have been conflicting reports on the development.
The reports of a possible Microsoft next-gen competitor have emerged out of two developer interviews last week suggesting that Microsoft is planning to snub virtual reality as a component as far as its next-gen project plans are concerned. In a recent interview, Pablo Lafora a game designer from the Tessera Studios that is behind the soon-to-be-released PSVR horror title Intruders: Hide and Seek said that Microsoft has been ignoring virtual reality in spite of the strong developer focus on future platforms for their upcoming titles. Lafora said that while Microsoft seems to not to have much interest in VR at this time and is not planning to incorporate any VR features into their next console, the next Xbox could just be HoloLens 2 compatible thereby ushering in the tech into its gaming hardware.
The co-creator of the VR puzzle adventure Xing: The Land Beyond John Torkington has also theorized that Microsoft might simply be playing a waiting game. Torkington explained that there are still a lot of technical challenges that will have to be overcome in order to move past the current first-gen VR. He posits that Microsoft engineers are currently simply reviewing the current offering in the market and figuring out ways of building better VR and might eventually come out with a superb product that will give the other players in the market a run for their money.
Torkington thinks there will continue to be a split between VR and non-VR titles coming out until we reach a point where the virtual reality is able to compete with TV. He makes the point that the split nature of the various virtual reality platforms will for the time being make the technology an inaccessible arena for both the public and developers and the tech will become more accessible once Microsoft throws the hat in the ring and enters the market which will also usher in increased investments in games.
