Minecraft Gear VR Supports Ends in October
Minecraft developer Mojang last week announced its decision to terminate support for “certain older devices and platforms” where you can access Minecraft. These include Gear VR, WP, Windows 10, Android devices that have less than 768MB of RAM, Kindle Fire and iOS devices that run iOS 10 or below. Support has also been discontinued on video cards supporting only DirectX 10.1 or below.
Following the discontinuation of support, Minecraft will no longer be supported or updated on these platforms.
Of relevance to the VR realms, support for the Gear VR version of Minecraft comes to an end this October. This means that from October this year, there won’t be any new updates on Minecraft Gear VR. The multiplayer and the Realms support will also come to and end. However, users will still be able to play Minecraft in the single-player mode. That means there will be no online mode in the Gear VR, something users have grown accustomed to.
However, the game remains on Oculus Rift and there doesn’t appear to be any plans to discontinue support there. The Samsung Gear VR headset is effectively dead anyway with Samsung no longer updating the software. Facebook also stopped SDK support for Gear VR and Samsung’s latest phones do not provide support for the VR headset so this news isn’t entirely surprising. Minecraft was never introduced to Oculus Go, another headset that is effectively on its way out.
According to the Minecraft team, the termination prevents current Gear VR and Windows 10 Mobile-based players from using Realms or the multiplayer from the unsupported devices. They further added that players having the Realms subscription will still have access to their Realm via the affected devices until at such a time that they will opt to update the subscription to a different supported device. However, the multiplayer will only work between devices that are of the same version.
The announcement put great emphasis on the fact that players can still play Minecraft on the unsupported devices after the October 2020 termination date, but only in the single-player mode. Players will still be able to continue building their world and making Marketplace purchases, including the Minecoins.
Users who sign in using a Microsoft/Xbox Live account will still be able to access their Marketplace purchases, Minecoins as well as their Realms subscription via other platforms.
Should you wish to, it will still be possible to move your worlds onto a different device simply by uploading those worlds to a Realm and then downloading a backup onto the new device. Users will also be able to ask for refunds for their Minecraft Realms subscription after the October 2020 date when the termination takes effect.
