Ming Chi Kuo: PSVR 2 Enter Mass Production in Second Half of 2022, Release Possibly in Spring 2023
Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has published a series of tweets detailing where the PSVR 2 parts are coming from and claiming that the headset will enter into mass production in the second half of this year with a production target of 1.5 million headsets. Should this prove true, we are likely looking at a Spring 2023 release date at the earliest.

Ming says that the assembler of the headset along with several component providers of the PSVR 2 headset are set to begin mass production with approximately 1.5 million units slated for production in the second half of this year. Depending on the development schedule of the PSVR 2 game titles, Ming says Sony may launch the headset in the first quarter of 2023.
Ming says the headset will launch with more than 20 first and third-party games. The headset is likely to have a good start thanks to Sony’s position and resources in the gaming industry which can accelerate the development of AAA games such as Horizon Call of the Mountain thereby driving the growth of the industry.
Ming says the headset will be using optical modules which is its most notable hardware upgrade. The first-generation PSVR 1 headset doesn’t have optical modules. The PSVR 2, on the other hand, is built with six optical modules including four 720P IR cameras as well as two eye-tracking cameras. The lens for the headset is supplied by Genius.
Kuo’s assumption is drawn from a “supply chain check”. Genius is the main supplier for the headset’s aspheric lenses and according to the analyst, the company has seen high-ASP orders for its aspherical lenses, Fresnel lenses, and Pancake lenses not only from Apple but also from non-Apple which is likely to be a major growth driver. The OLED panels for the PSVR 2 headset will be supplied by SDC. The headset will also use MediaTek processors while the manufacturing will be handled by Goertek, the same company that makes the Pico headsets and the experimental Qualcomm XR headsets.
PlayStation VR 2 Likely to Launch in 2023
Kuo thinks PSVR 2 is likely launching in the first quarter of 2023 although this launch date will be dependent on the development progress of the PlayStation VR 2 launch games.
There isn’t concrete information on Sony’s launch games so far although in a recent investor brief, PlayStation chief Jim Ryan stated that the headset will launch with more than 20 titles and that these will include both first and third-party titles.
Ryan has stated that Sony is pouring resources into a significant number of games in order to offer fans and VR enthusiasts an impressive lineup of launch titles when the headset arrives.

Sony is planning a detailed unveil of the PSVR 2 titles on June 2. Sony gaming spokesperson Shuhei Yoshida has talked of a sneak peek of a number of PSVR 2 titles on Twitter. “Sneak peek” definitely implies we are not seeing a big reveal any time soon.
As anticipation boils to a crescendo, rumors are also swirling about in the run-up to Sony’s June event. Some Redditors have shared screenshots of the June event program indicating virtual reality versions of the titles Resident Evil: Village, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Daemonium, and Avatar. There are also rumors that a new Killzone VR is also under development.
