New Gamescom Trailer for ‘Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond’
Respawn Entertainment showed the trailer and new game scenes of the upcoming Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond this week during the digital Gamescom 2020. The VR shooter is set to be released during the Christmas season this year.
Respawn Entertainment Game Director Peter Hirschmann stated that the game features multiplayer modes that can only be done in VR. The game is of course a virtual reality (Rift) exclusive so the modes that users “can only do in VR” probably means that some of the gameplay styles in the game cannot be done via any other platform apart from VR.
In an interview, Hirshmann stated that in addition to the Medal of Honor campaign, Respawn Entertainment will also be shipping a full suite of VR modes including a few that users will only be able to do in VR.
The trailer showed a few days ago includes new footage for the single-player campaign although Respawn is yet to share much about the multiplayer campaigns. It will be interesting to see how the modes which can only be done in VR will pan out.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is a AAA shooter which is based on World War II. It transforms the historic battlefields of the Second World War into a virtual reality gaming epic, at least according to the promises made so far. There are good reasons to hope for the best. Respawn has always stood for top quality as can be seen in its recently demonstrated Titanfall 2. With Apex Legends, Respawn also demonstrated that it has what it takes to implement successful battle royale concepts. The studio is also developing the upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond displays historical authenticity and real World War veterans. The player slips into the game as an agent of the allies at the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and is tasked with infiltrating and outwitting the Nazi war machine. The player will be working with the French Resistance to sabotage the Nazi operations behind the enemy lines.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond features the full story campaign and the multiplayer modes. It also has a unique story gallery where the player can sit and listen to veterans and survivors of the Second World War.
The game mechanics and props should appear in their original context. On the one hand, it will be a fun game as a shooter but it is also pregnant with the accurate historical setting that brings some historical understanding to the terrible events that happened in the first half of the 20th century. We will see how the game achieves this delicate balancing act when it launches soon.
The last release of the time-honored Medal of Honor series was in 2012 when Electronic Arts released the Medal of Honor: Warfighter. The developer Danger Close’s game didn’t sell well and Electronic Arts decided to simply pound down the whole series as it always does with titles that don’t do well.
This time, the game is coming to VR on Oculus Rift. It is still not clear whether a Quest rollout is also in the offing. However, the game should work on Quest via the Oculus Link connection. The release date is yet to be set but the game should a see release before the end of 2020.
