Nintendo’s Labo VR Kit Has Sold Out at Major Retailers
Nintendo’s cardboard Labo VR kit has proven to be wildly popular after all. Within just a few days after going on sale in major online retailers, the virtual reality kit has been virtually sold out. All the major online retailers in US and Europe are showing that the product is “temporarily out of stock”.
Even the large retailers such as Amazon are reporting the product is out of stock. The only kit that is currently available is the Nintendo Starter Set but information on leading retailers is indicating that it will ship in one to two months.
The $80 full set of the cardboard VR headset is currently sold out in major online retail stores such as Walmart, Amazon US, Target, NewEgg and Best Buy. The full set includes the virtual reality headset, the Nintendo Labo Software, Camera, Wind Pedal, Bird, Blaster and Elephant. The cheaper Starter Set costs $40 and it is still in stock in almost all the major retailers showing the more stripped down product is not as popular as the fuller set. The Starter Set consists only of the headset and the attachable blaster.
The full set is also out of stock in the major European online retail markets such as Germany’s MediaMarkt and Amazon.de; French stores Fnac and Amazon.fr and the UK standbys Game and PC World. However, the device is available on UK’s Amazon.co.uk and on the Italian version Amazon.it. Both sites ship to multiple countries in Europe.
US auction and shopping website eBay is currently listing pre-order guarantees that will go for a price of at least $130. With the product in high demand following the release and the supplies not meeting the demand, expect to see some price-gouging in the secondary marketplaces. You can also find other “buy now” offers in Korean and Japanese marketplaces but expect the markups to be hefty with the Nintendo’s Labo Kit becoming a rare commodity just a few days after its release.
Nintendo is yet to provide an official statement for the shortages but it could simply be due to the demand exceeding all expectations. Before the launch of the latest Labo kit, Target had run a clearance sale for all the previous Labo sets in a bid to offload excess stock and create room for the latest models. There was always the expectation that the previously released models would not move once the latest iteration had been released. Given the sluggish performance of the previous versions, Nintendo may also have produced a smaller amount of the VR kits to avoid the burden of having its products sitting in the shelves for years. However, the Nintendo Labo VR kit has proven to be a more substantial virtual reality offering that’s probably attracted more “mainstream” VR enthusiasts. With the demand now confirmed, Nintendo may just go ahead and replenish the stocks in the coming weeks.
