Nissan and NTT DOCOMO test ‘invisible-to-visible’ technology in moving vehicle using 5G
Nissan and NTT DOCOMO have put Nissan’s ‘invisible to visible’ technology through its field test in a moving vehicle, using DOCOMO’s fifth-generation mobile communications connectivity.
Invisible-to-visible (I2V) is a future Nissan Intelligent Mobility technology that merges the real and virtual worlds. Combining information from sensors outside and inside the vehicle with the data from the cloud helps drivers “see the invisible” – such as what is farther down the road, behind a building or around the corner.
I2V also connects drivers and passengers to the Metaverse, a virtual world where people can interact through avatars. People in a remote location can appear inside the car as three-dimensional, augmented-reality avatars to provide company or assistance.
The companies are using DOCOMO’s high-speed, large-capacity, low-latency mobile 5G connectivity for the field test to transmit avatar data wirelessly into the test vehicle, and in-car camera views from the vehicle, in real time.
The companies will evaluate how the people inside the car and those represented through avatars sense each other’s presence via the user interfaces, and usability of I2V’s interactive communication features will also be assessed.
In May, NTT DOCOMO announced the first successful test of a 28 GHz wireless data transmission between a 5G base station and a mobile station in a car moving at nearly 190mph alongside Nissan. For its test, DOCOMO partnered with NEC and NTT. It was undertaken at the Japan Automobile Research Institute using a modified Nissan GT-R and was conducted to simulate the experience of using a 5G connection at speeds similar to a high-speed train.
