Oculus Go Standalone VR Headset Prices Now Permanently Cut to $149
The entry-level standalone virtual reality headset is already one of the cheapest in the market. It also offers one of the best virtual reality experiences for a standalone VR headset, without the need to connect it to a PC or console to use it. The headset is just about to get more affordable with the price now permanently dropped to $149 at various retailers including Amazon and Best Buy. The prices for both the 32GB and 64GB versions have been cut by $50 bringing them to $149 and $199 permanently.
The permanent price cut is applicable to all markets where the Oculus Go headsets are officially sold. The new prices have already taken effect on the Oculus shop as well as on Amazon.
The Oculus Go headset was released in May 2018 and provided users with the level of VR experience that they would typically get with the Samsung Gear VR but within an overall standalone package. When the Oculus Go was unveiled, it generated a lot of excitement as VR users no longer had to rely on smartphones which tended to overheat.
Oculus Go headset inherited the three degrees of freedom of tracking from the smartphone-based VR headsets. The virtual reality headset detects the rotation in all directions but no movement into the room. This also applies to the enclosed rotary and the pointing controller.
Why Oculus Go is Now Cheaper
The Oculus market was eroded by the entry of the standalone Oculus Quest headset in May 2019, just a year after the launch of the GO headset. The Quest headset offers full freedom of movement for both hands and heads. At just $399, the Quest headset is also relatively affordable and it brings out the true strengths of virtual reality more clearly.
With its popularity and success, the Oculus Quest headset has become the standard standalone virtual reality headset, defining the future standard of all Oculus virtual reality systems. The Oculus Go headset was therefore simply an experimental intermediate step towards the ideal Oculus headset for the mainstream market.
Oculus Go was built for everyone. It was the third headset launched by Oculus and was meant to serve as the compromise choice between the smartphone-powered Samsung Gear VR and the PC-powered Oculus Rift headset. The Oculus Go headset is more powerful than the phone-powered headset but not as powerful as the PC-powered virtual reality experience.
Not only does it offer a better and standalone virtual reality experience but it also has plenty of critically-acclaimed games, movies to watch as well as concerts that users can immerse themselves in. The content on the Go platform is constantly getting refreshed time after time. The portable form factor makes them a unique offering and they have built-in speakers that offer quality audio without the encumbrance of cords. Oculus Go headset owners can purchase a carrying case to protect the gear when on the go.
With the Oculus Rift S PC VR headsets continuing to serve as the software experimentation platform, the future of Oculus Go remains uncertain. It is not clear whether Facebook would still want to launch video-optimized virtual reality headsets. Oculus technical manager John Carmack has talked of his requests for an Oculus 2 so the possibility of a second-generation Oculus Go cannot be entirely ruled out. But for the time being, the focus remains on the Oculus Quest headset which offers users a full-fledged virtual reality experience.
Oculus Go Shipping Delay
On Amazon, there is currently a moderate shipping delay for the Oculus Go and Quest headsets. The headsets will be unavailable for shipping until mid-February. To get your headset orders sooner, you can shop at either Walmart or Best Buy. The two retailers also offer free shipping on orders. Buyers can also opt for a free in-store pickup where this option is available.
