Oculus Quest: YouTube VR Now Supporting Hand Tracking
The YouTube VR app makes all content on the video platform accessible in virtual reality. Users can log in to the app using their YouTube profiles and gain access to their subscribed channels as well as video preferences so they can watch the YouTube videos on a large virtual screen. Apart from the classic 2D videos, users can also view the content in native 180 and 360 degrees which is not possible with the traditional monitor.
The YouTube VR app has been maintained for years and is available in almost all Virtual Reality platforms. The app has been optimized for virtual reality and is quite easy and super-intuitive to use in spite of its full YouTube functionality.
Following the latest update, YouTube VR is now even better, particularly if you have an Oculus Quest (2) headset.
With the hand-tracking support, users can now operate the YouTube VR app with their own hands and they no longer have to pull out the touch controller to watch YouTube on the bed or couch.
The virtual screen can now be easily moved around the room by hand. You can opt to make it a little higher up or bigger with relative ease. Users can start the videos by bringing their thumb and index fingers together. You can also search for the videos via voice recognition. To do this, you simply have to activate the corresponding symbol and then say what you are looking for.
The simultaneous support for hand tracking and voice recognition now makes YouTube VR one of the most technically advanced VR apps on the market and is a foretaste of what the XR interfaces of the future could feel like.
The fact that hand tracking does not work perfectly has been largely due to the state of innovation of the hand tracking hardware for Quest (2). With the next generation of hand tracking hardware, both optical hand and finger tracking should see significant improvements in both latency and accuracy.
