Performance Leaks Reveal Fresh Details on the Hardware Specs of the Samsung XR Headset
Fresh details on a Geekbench listing have emerged about the rumored Samsung XR headset.
There have been scarce details about the much-rumored Samsung XR device but it was generally accepted the mobile giant was building an XR wearable in partnership with Google that will complement its highly developed mobile hardware ecosystem and that the device would launch sometime in 2024 or 2025.
During the recent Galaxy Unpacked event, both Samsung and Google intimated that we would soon see the culmination of their XR partnership “coming this year”. Many interpreted this as a possible XR hardware launch before the end of the year.
New leaks have now emerged on Geekbench showing the potential performance scores of the Samsung XR headset. If this information proves accurate, it appears the Samsung XR product will be a close rival of the Apple Vision Pro and will feature some AI integration. The Geekbench performance scores suggest that the headset could be launched very soon.
In mid-July, reports emerged that Samsung was planning to launch a dev version of a headset that is a competitor to Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3 this October. The recent leaks hint that the company is moving full steam ahead with the launch in a few weeks.
The entry of the Samsung XR headset in the Geekbench performance scores has also revealed some important hardware specs.
The Geekbench performance scores don’t explicitly mention a Samsung XR headset. Instead, they cite a device dubbed Samsung SM-I130 but this same designation had been linked to the XR headset by a leaker in January this year.
The scores also list the CPU performance as a 6-core 2.36GHz processor which also matches a known Samsung headset hardware detail: the headset has been rumored to be using a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. Qualcomm had earlier teased the headset’s use of the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. The 6-core processor it uses has cores capable of running up to 2.4 GHz.
The fresh hardware specs leak shows the headset has 16GB of RAM, the same as that of the Apple Vision Pro and twice that of the Meta Quest 3. Such an impressive RAM not only ensures the smooth operation of apps and experiences but will also help with AI integration.
Impressive RAM was one of the highlights of the Google phones featured at the recent Google Pixel 9 event with the Pixel 9 packing 12GB, and the Pixel 9 Pro models packing 16GB of RAM which ensured considerable improvement in the AI integration. With a bigger RAM, the phones can accomplish much more with Google’s Gemini AI resulting in quicker results. It also means the data will not be shared with a remote server, ensuring greater data security and privacy.
If the Samsung XR headset also has 16GB of RAM, it will flawlessly perform the same tricks that the Google Pixel 9 Pro is capable of.
AI integration in the Samsung XR headset could give Google and Samsung some leg up in the increasingly competitive XR hardware market given that the frontrunners, Meta and Apple, are still not leveraging AI meaningfully in their best hardware. For Google and Samsung, the AI integration would make their hardware even more valuable in a market where consumers are increasingly pursuing cutting-edge technology.
Leaks have also confirmed that the Samsung headset will be running an Android 14 framework. Gemini is an integral part of the latest Android OS, so this is not surprising. Meta’s HorizonOS is an Android spinoff and Android being a native Google operating system, it is surprising that its adaptation is powering a headset whose creation Google is a key part of.
At the moment, these are just leaks so some details may not be entirely accurate. In any case, we have to wait until the headset’s full launch to get an accurate picture of the specs and features the headset will pack.
If the leaks prove accurate, then we have only to wait a few months left to lay our hands on the headset and try out its impressive specs as it is scheduled for launch by the end of the year, Samsung having promised it is coming “this year”. The best bet for the unveiling will likely be the Samsung Developer’s Conference on October 3, 2024. Whenever it is launched, we will be here to cover it for you.
