Play and Connect More With Oculus’ Latest Social Features
With Facebook at the helm, Oculus has always pushed the social aspects of virtual reality (VR), and the latest updates to arrive continue that methodology. Rolling out this week are new features so you can connect with friends and make new ones to enrich your VR experience.
To help expand your friend’s list Oculus is making the process for you to find your Facebook friends easier. An option will appear in your privacy settings where you can select whether people can find you by your Facebook name, offering Only Me, Facebook Friends on Oculus or Public options. If you’re a new user then this setting will default to friends only.
Also improved is the Parties functionality. First up is Public Parties for Oculus Quest so that groups can voice chat with each other. As the call can be attended by those outside of a users Oculus friends list this can help encourage new connections for multiplayer videogames. Public parties can support up to 8 people at a time.
Additionally, the ‘Travel Together’ feature then allows those within a party (either private or public) to travel to an app together. Oculus has partnered with several apps to enable this, these include Echo VR, Racket: Nx, Synth Riders, Eleven Table Tennis, Elven Assassin, Epic Roller Coasters, Arizona Sunshine, Cloudlands 2, Spaceteam VR, Ironlights, Multiverse, and Pro Putt by Topgolf.
These updates are part of Oculus Quest’s 19.0 build which includes several smaller enhancements:
- See hands interact with controllers
- Take a photo with your controller (“press and hold the Oculus button (0) and then press a trigger. Your photos will appear in the camera roll.”)
- Japanese Keyboard Layout
- In-app Keyboard (dependent on developers implementation)
As Facebook continues to improve its current lineup of devices – and slowly wind one down – its also looking to the future with recent reports indicating possible mass production starting this month on a new device. As further improvements are released as well as details regarding new products, VRFocus will keep you updated.
