Popular UK Retailer Lists HTC Vive Cosmos Price
The popular UK retailer Argos this week listed the price (product page has since been taken down) for HTC’s Vive Cosmos VR headset at £699.99 which works out to about $850.
The listing price was described as a “mistake” by a HTC representative and it is entirely plausible that the “leaked” price was simply a random placeholder figure. But HTC has in the past confirmed that its Vive Cosmos headset will cost less than $900 so a price of roughly $850 could as well be an accurate figure. Reached out for comment, a HTC representative issued the following statement:-
“We’re aware a price was listed by mistake on a retail partner website. We look forward to sharing more details with you about Cosmos soon, but have no further comment at this time.”
Should this price be confirmed, the Vive Cosmos VR headset will be retailing at $50 more than the original Vive when it was first launched in 2016. We don’t have a confirmation on the price though and HTC may as well launch its Vive Cosmos kit for $799 in the U.S. (Many releases so far have been listed with the same figure in dollars, Euros or Pounds on both sides of the Atlantic) Should that prove to be the case, the Vive Cosmos kit will be significantly cheaper than the Vive Pro enterprise-level virtual reality headset that HTC launched two years ago.
Still, given that Facebook has released a lineup of relatively high-spec but cheaper headsets with the Oculus Rift S going for $399, the Vive Cosmos price looks a whole lot steeper but sits right in the middle between the Rift S and the Vive Index headset which goes for $999 with superior specs.
The Cosmos has impressive specs and inside-out tracking so it is expected to do well. The headset has a combined resolution of 2880×1700 and it will launch with six inside-out tracking cameras. It is also coming with two new controllers that look almost like the Rift S controllers.
The Vive Cosmos will be HTC’s second consumer-focused virtual reality headset for its market in the west. The headset runs on PC but HTC has stated that it will have compatibility with other platforms such as smartphones. HTC also stated that the tethered PC VR kit will have “scalability”.
The Vive Cosmos headset has flown quite under the radar as some other headset releases such as the Vive Index, Oculus Quest and the Rift S generated a lot of buzz and hogged the limelight.
Apart from its superb specs, the ergonomics also take the centerstage with this tethered PC VR kit. The front part of the headset flips up and the headset balance has been “perfected”. You won’t have to grapple with the lopsided weight distribution that users experienced with the first model.
Styling does not, however, deviate too far from that of the first model. The device is likely to launch in Q3 of this year.
