Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon Spaces XR Platform for AR Developers
Qualcomm has launched Snapdragon Spaces, an XR developer platform for both app and game developers building head-worn AR apps.
The platform software is now freely available for download by developers.
Qualcomm announced this on Day 1 of the Augmented Reality World Expo, a trade event taking place in Santa Clara, California. Qualcomm’s Hugo Swart is providing one of the opening talks at the event.
Snapdragon Spaces was launched in November last year and provides proven technology as well as an open and cross-device horizontal platform and ecosystem where developers’ ideas spring to life for head-worn Augmented Reality.
Qualcomm Technologies is aiming to be a major enabler of the metaverse by pumping continued investments along with research in extended reality (XR). Additionally, when developers download the Snapdragon Spaces, they can buy a hardware development kit that they can use to start creating Augmented Reality experiences on commercial hardware. Qualcomm is treating these XR innovations as a foundation for the metaverse.
Developers can visit spaces.qualcomm.com to start creating new experiences with Snapdragon Spaces.
When developers download the Snapdragon Spaces platform, they unlock the foundational tools required to create 3D applications for Augmented Reality glasses from the ground up and even incorporate head-worn AR features into their existing 2D smartphone applications, and much more. With Snapdragon Spaces, a developer-only makes minimal changes to the standard ARFoundation setup and they can start creating Active AR games as opposed to the other AR systems for Unity.
The Snapdragon Spaces development environment provides studios with a number of features such as room, hand and finger tracking, 3D mapping of the environment, image and object recognition as well as the permanent anchoring of objects in an environment. It also offers a realistic occlusion of digital objects by real objects. The Snapdragon Spaces platform is now available globally.
Qualcomm is launching the hardware development kit to further popularize the Snapdragon Spaces platform. However, Snapdragon Spaces will not provide you access to Qualcomm’s latest AR reference model with wireless split streaming and a superfast XR2 chip.
The hardware development kit includes the Lenovo ThinkReality A3 smart glasses and the Motorola Edge+ (2022). The ThinkReality A3 smart glasses are powered by Snapdragon’s XR1 Platform and also have an 8MP RGB camera that delivers 1080p high-quality videos. It also features dual fisheye cameras for room-scale tracking.
The Motorola Edge+ (2022) is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Mobile Platform. These two devices seamlessly pair up to provide developers with full access to the Snapdragon Spaces platform and a world of opportunities to explore. Following the announcement, both developers and companies can make orders at https://spaces.qualcomm.com.
Qualcomm Ventures says that it has invested in the 3D cloud and XR content management and distribution platform Echo3D as well as in the meditation app builder Tripp. The investments are part of its $100 million Snapdragon Metaverse Fund.
The investments form part of Qualcomm’s quest to support transformative companies that are developing the next generation of experiences across various technologies including immersive and XR media (virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality). Through the Snapdragon Metaverse Fund, the company is hoping to foster and enable innovation in the entire ecosystem through Qualcomm Ventures investments and the developer grants for content projects provided by Qualcomm Technologies.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Pathfinder Program is created to provide support to AR innovators working on the frontiers of spatial computing. The program has already funded various developer projects. Under the program, these projects will get early-access platform technology, co-marketing opportunities, project funding, and hardware development kits. Recipients in the Pathfinder program include Designium, Merge Labs, CareAR, Holo-Light, MSM.digital, SYMMETRICAL, Digital Dream Labs, Cognition Labs, Zoe Immersive, Trace 3D, Volucap, NeuroLab, WilcoxMedia, WE/AR Studio, Volucap, homeAR, InceptionXR, and Syncreality.
