Rec Room Will Soon Be Available on iPhone and iPad
The popular social VR platform Rec Room is set to expand its reach by launching a new app version for both iPhone and iPad. The game’s developer, Seattle-based Against Gravity, has announced the new mobile version of the game will soon be available on App Store. The company is currently engaged in internal testing of the game and will soon send out Beta invites for user testing later this month.
Rec Room is currently providing the Rec Room Mobile signup page which gives prospective users a beta access to testing release of the new service for iOS devices. According to Against Gravity’s Head of Community Shawn Whiting, the service will land on the App Store shortly after the wrap up of the beta testing depending on how successful the tests are.
The mobile implementation takes the game out of the giant network of virtual rooms and games and onto a mobile platform that can practically fit into a user’s pockets. With the game on iPhone or iPad, you will be able to receive text from a friend and hop right into the game no matter where you are.
According to Against Gravity, the move towards off-VR form factors was in response to feedback from users who wanted to hang out with their friends who didn’t have access to virtual reality headsets. The company first responded by creating the screen mode which allowed anyone on a PC or PS4 to play Rec Room with other VR headset-wearing players. Since the launch of the screen modes, the company has seen fast growth as well as creativity in the user community on screens and Against Gravity is keen to see how the game will perform on mobile. Perhaps, it might generate another critical mass of mobile-based users and unlock new creativity on the platform.
Against Gravity hasn’t divulged any information on when it plans to launch Rec Room on Android devices. The company has noted that the most requested platforms currently are iOS, Android and Nintendo.
The upcoming support for the iOS mobile devices is most likely a byproduct of the company’s effort to optimize the game for the Oculus Quest headset which hit the market on May 21. It is also possible that other Quest-optimized social VR platforms could follow the same path so as to bring on board more concurrent users.
Rewards for Creators
Against Gravity is planning to develop Rec Room to a point where even someone without coding knowledge will be able to quickly build, publish and ship a game on multiple platforms including PC, console, mobile as well as virtual reality.
Apart from its cross-platform creation tools, Against Gravity is also exploring ways in which it can pay creators for their content in Rec Room. The company will be looking at allowing creators to charge in-app tokens for any innovations, events or costumes they have created as well as for any other items that they developed into their rooms and games. Paying players for making Stuff on Rec Room will be a huge deal and is quite an ambitious goal.
By creating a community where players can do lots of fun stuff together across multiple platforms ranging from flat screens to VR and mobile phones, Rec Room has accomplished a great deal. It will be interesting to see how the game will feel like on the touchscreens.
