Rematch Studios Unveil Debut VR Experience, Psychological Thriller Area of Darkness: Sentinel
There aren’t many indie virtual reality (VR) developers based Karachi, Pakistan that VRFocus knows of, so when Rematch Studios announced its first title Area of Darkness: Sentinel via Reddit today, it was worth learning more.
Described by the studio as a psychological thriller/adventure experience, from the trailer Area of Darkness: Sentinel looks like it has similarities to videogames like Tomb Raider, involving evil villains, ancient relics, hair raising escapades and of course a mysterious tropical island. There will be multiple locations to explore, from a university in upstate New York to millennia-old tombs.
“Follow the story of Dr. Anne Evans on her journey from 1978 New York to the timeless Sentinel Islands, one of the few places in the world yet to be touched by modern civilization – an area of darkness. Set off on a breathtaking adventure to solve an ancient mystery, thousands of years in the making.”
The videogame will have you solving puzzles, both environmental and physics-based using a variety of techniques, mixed in with exciting set pieces, quick-time events and hand to hand combat. It sounds like things can get rather gory with the studio explaining: “There is a lot of violence against fictional humanoid creatures as well as mutated animal like creatures. This includes stabbing, slashing, bone breaking and eye popping.”
Area of Darkness: Sentinel will feature both teleportation and free-roaming mechanics to suit most players, making the story-driven experience as immersive as possible. Total play time is estimated to be around 2 to 2.5 hours in length.
In development for over two years, Rematch Studios is aiming for a Steam release on 26th February 2019, supporting Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. The team are also working on bringing the title to Oculus Store, most likely occurring after the Steam release has taken place.
