Sony Releases New PlayStation VR 2 Headset That Gives Some Unique Insights About the Headset
Sony has released a new official “Feel a New Real” trailer for its next-generation PlayStation VR 2 headset.
Last week, Sony shared the first impressions of its upcoming PlayStation VR 2 headset. This week, Sony released a trailer of the headset titled “Feel a New Real” that gives some unique insights about the headset. The headset is set to launch in early 2023 so fans won’t wait for long.
The trailer heralds the first of what will be a revving hype machine in the run-up to the launch of the headset.
The trailer provides the first glimpse of the headset in action. The video provides a comprehensible look into the technology and highlights some of the headset’s unique features.
Modern Design and Top-End Display
The trailer begins with a presentation of the headset and its Sense controllers. The hardware has a spherical shape and is a welcome shift from the boxy design of the older virtual reality headsets. However, the PlayStation VR 2 headset remains bulky.
After an exposition of the headset and controllers, the trailer takes you to an opening gate that reveals a spectacular landscape. Sony is using this to showcase the vastness of the virtual reality landscape and the fact the user is visually immersed in the virtual environment rather than merely viewing them on a monitor.
The trailer then shows the technical features of the headset. It starts with the display, which has a resolution of 2,000 by 2,040 pixels per eye. Most of the current headsets have about the same resolution.
The PSVR2 uses OLED technology. It surpasses most of the other virtual reality headsets in color fidelity and contrast. Most of the other headsets use LC displays rather than OLED display technology.
Eye Tracking
The PSVR2 supports eye tracking functionality. The PlayStation VR 2 headset is the consumer virtual reality headset with eye-tracking support.
Eye tracking functionality makes it possible to have realistic avatars and eye contact in avatars, gaze-based interactions, and foveated rendering. Foveated rendering is a rendering technique where the eye tracking system and the VR headset minimize the rendering workload by considerably degrading the image quality on the peripheral vision and maximizing the image quality in the line of vision inside the zone where the fovea is gazing at.
Foveated rendering helps save computing power and allows for more detailed virtual reality worlds. The PlayStation VR 2 headset is the first consumer-focused virtual reality headset that uses foveated rendering and is likely to be popular with avid VR enthusiasts.
Sony’s field of view doesn’t differ markedly from other contemporary headsets. First reports indicate that the PSVR2 headset’s field of view is wider than those of other commercially focused VR headsets such as the Meta Quest 2.
Unique Hand and Head Haptics
Although 3D audio and finger recognition have been standard features for many years, headset feedback has been lacking. The PSVR 2 headset has a built-in vibration motor in its head mount for extra haptic effects on the head. This design also helps in curbing motion sickness, a unique feature of the PlayStation VR 2 headset.
The PSVR 2 headset also has the new Sense controllers. These controllers have been specifically designed for the PSVR 2 headset. The Sense controllers also have the same haptics technology used in the DualSense gamepad and adaptive triggers for simulating different resistances. This allows for more realistic interactions. The Sense controllers have more advanced haptic feedback than those of other competing hardware.
