Sony to Use Tobii Eye Tracking for PlayStation VR 2
In a press release issued today, Swedish high-technology company Tobii confirms that it will supply the eye-tracking technology for Sony’s upcoming PlayStation VR 2 headset.
In the press release, Tobii CEO Anand Srivatsa says Sony’s PlayStation VR 2 will create “a baseline for immersive virtual reality (VR) entertainment” that will allow millions of users across the globe to “experience the power of eye-tracking.”
As part of the deal, Tobii will be getting upfront revenue starting this year. The press release reveals that revenue from the deal will account for over 10% of Tobii’s total revenues in 2022. However, it notes that revenue contribution and potential beyond 2022 are still mired in “significant uncertainty” as a result of “the rapid evolution of the VR industry.”
The Tobii press release doesn’t mention any possible market launch for the PlayStation VR 2 headset.
In February 2022, Sony created the official website for the PlayStation VR 2 headset with a pre-order newsletter that PSN members can sign up to. Around the same time, Tobii had issued a press release stating that it was in negotiations with Sony Interactive Entertainment for the possible use of its eye-tracking technology in the Sony PlayStation VR 2.
The latest press release confirms that those negotiations had been successful.
