SteamVR App ‘YUR’ Counts Number of Calories You Burn in VR
Virtual reality is becoming the newest fitness fad. A lot of these games and apps require that player immerse themselves into the experience with their whole body rather than simply sitting on the couch. There is some physical movement involved where player can expend some calories.
One of the best cases of VR games that offers some physical exertion and expenditure of energy is Beat Saber. There are several instances where players have been able to shed some appreciable weight after several weeks on Beat Saber. There are also other virtual reality games such as the boxing simulation hit Creed that enable you to get a good sweat and shed off some calories.
It is estimated that players in an intense Beat Saber game can burn as many calories as they would in a tennis match.
YUR: Your VR Fitness Tracker
If fitness is one of your primary aims of indulging in a virtual reality experience, then you would want to know how many calories you are burning in every playing session. A virtual reality startup has come up with an app that tracks the calories expended in VR. The startup YUR has made a VR fitness app by the same name that is a calorie counter. The YUR app is currently available as an Early Access version on SteamVR. The app counts calories expended across all SteamVR apps.
A new Oculus Quest version of the app is also available although it is not in the official store so the app must be installed by the SideQuest software. If you are already using SideQuest, then you can just download the 2.0 Update of the app which will, among other things, improve both the accuracy and stability of the YUR app.
The next step will involve upgrading the YUR app with a level system as well as an online community where players will share their VR sports and achievements. The official launch of the full-featured YUR app has been slated for early 2020.
There have been other efforts to incorporate calorie-tracking functions in digital experiences. One such effort was launched in October 2019 by the VR Institute of Health and Exercise via a smartphone app that measures the calories burned while playing in virtual reality.
There are other variants of VR fitness apps for Oculus Quest that have been launched over the past year.
