Superhot VR Surpasses 1 Million Units in Sales on Quest
Released in 2016, Superhot VR has evolved into something of a must-have app among VR enthusiasts. The studio has now revealed that it has just hit the 1 million mark of the Superhot VR apps sold on the Quest platform.
Superhot VR has been a massive VR success story. It uses the mechanics drawn from the studio’s Superhot (2016) which was a viral hit. The VR rendering of the game gives users an addictive mix of the cinematic slow-motion action scenes as the player physically busts up waves of oncoming red crystalline enemies. The high-adrenaline action in Superhot VR has seen being app this classified as a VR fitness app.
The Superhot team announced the 1 million unit milestone in a blogpost celebrating its fifth-year anniversary. The post didn’t reveal how much of these sales are attributable to Quest 2, the recently launched standalone VR headset that has been a runaway success, selling millions of units.
However, Superhot Team released a graph (see below) representing all the Superhot franchise games that have been sold to date. The purple shows Superhot VR that saw a considerable bump in sales following the release of the first Quest headset in May 2019, a bump representing nearly twice the sales of its flatscreen game and its successful debut in 2016.
In late 2020, particularly on Christmas Day, there was an even larger spike in sales. The Superhot Team notes that this day represented the largest ever sales in Superhot VR. This spike can doubt be attributed to the Oculus Quest 2 headset owners purchasing the game to try out their first VR experience.
The Superhot Team has also grossed considerable revenues from the sales on Quest. At $25, the title is currently on a 30% off sale, the gross revenue has topped an estimated $25 million from that platform alone. This is a rough estimate of the revenues, though, considering that the studio has had regular sales and bundles so the $25 million revenues could be on the higher side. But it is an encouraging revenue milestone for the VR developer community. VR content development is finally becoming lucrative.
It’s not just Superhot VR that has reaped the benefits from the popularity of the Oculus Quest 2 headset. The new standalone VR headset has driven sales of several other games on the Oculus Store.
Recently, Facebook announced that the headset had helped generate more than $1 million in sales in more than 60 Quest apps that account for roughly a third of all the apps on the official Oculus Store. The Quest 2 headset is currently also the second most-used virtual reality headset on Steam thanks to the Oculus Link connection to a VR-ready PC.
