Ubisoft Building a New VR Team for an Unnamed Project
Ubisoft is building a new virtual reality team based in Dusseldorf that is expected to grow to 5o employees for a yet to be announced VR project. This is happening at a time when some of the large videogame developers are beginning to show a strong interest in virtual reality content development.
Some of the top studios that are embracing VR game development include Gearbox Studios, Bethseda and Ubisoft. Ubisoft was one of the earliest to hop onto the VR train among the big videogame developers with titles such as Space Junkies, Eagle Flight, Star Trek: Bridge Crew and Werewolves Within. The company’s decision to start hiring a specialist VR team is a pointer to the fact that it is just about to ramp up its efforts in this frontier.
Ubisoft is looking to hire 50 people to work on a AAA title which will use one of the company’s biggest IPs. The company says that it is currently focusing on hiring the core team but it plans to hire more staff in the future.
Ubisoft is said to have already signed exclusive contracts for the virtual reality versions of some of its most popular video game brands. Ubisoft has plenty of these to choose from including famous brands such as Far Cry, Tom Clancy, Assassins Creed, Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six among others.
Triple A VR Titles with External Funding
Ubisoft was one of the virtual reality pioneers among the big game studios. Apart from its arcade content, the company also developed various kinds of experimental content including its board game adaptation Werewolves Within, its bird flight title Eagle’s Flight as well as its Star Trek bridge simulation Star Trek: Bridge Crew. Its most recent release was the space arcade shooter Space Junkies.
Its initial games had been developed by relatively small teams and they did not make the studio much money. Diving head on into the AAA VR game development is fraught with risks and the company is most probably only doing so with the assurance of a big name outside funder that will provide the studio with lucrative subsidized VR projects. This could most probably be Facebook or Sony but for now, not much is known about Ubisoft’s partner in question for its upcoming VR development blitz.
Some of the positions that it is recruiting for have already been placed on the company website and they are all based in Dusseldorf in Germany.
