Upcoming VR MMPORG Surpasses $200,000 on Kickstarter With 18 Weeks to Go
Zenith’s Kickstarter campaign has already raised more than $200,000 from 2,300 backers with just over two weeks to go against an initial target of $25,000. This is more than 800% of its targeted goal, showing a highly enthusiastic interest in the project.
Zenith is an upcoming virtual reality MMPORG that has been developed by the creators of Conjure Strike. The game features an anime-style aesthetic along with action-focused combat gameplay inspired by the rhythm VR game Beat Saber.
The project’s original $25,000 fundraising goal was too low and it was quite doubtful whether the studio would build any serious MMO on that initial budget, even after factoring in additional external funding. But with upwards of $200,000 in funds already available for the project, the company now has the financial war chest to build the robust MMO that they have in mind.
After hitting its initial target of $25,000, the Kickstarter campaign has burst through six out of seven stretch goals it set including the player housing customization, in-game familiars, transmogs for visual customization, Ramen Review livestream by the creators’ player vendors that will be for selling merchandise as well as a new playable race. Only one stretch goal is left; the $250,000 fundraising target for a level editor.
Zenith is quite ambitious in the range of hardware that it supports. Not only is it targeting the PC VR headsets such as HTC Vive, Valve Index and Oculus Rift but it will also be supporting standalone virtual reality headsets such as Oculus Quest and PSVR. An option to play it on non-VR PC setups is also available. The developers are planning to add a fully-compatible cross-play between all the device and the PC simultaneously, something similar to VRChat, OrbusVR and Rec Room.
It sounds quite impressive but it is important to keep in mind that this is still a Kickstarter so there are no guarantees of it even seeing the light of day. The developers are also relatively a wild card as far as big ticket game development is concerned. They have never developed and shipped a project of this magnitude before and the team at the studio is relatively small. Still, there is plenty to be optimistic for about the project. The hugely successful fundraising effort is a good start.
The team has fixed the “Estimated Delivery” date at August 2020. However, going by past Kickstarter projects, that date might actually be for the alpha launch and the full launch or a wide Early Release might come at a much later date.
