Vader Immortal – Episode II Concept Art And Details Revealed
The director of the Star Wars VR series drops new details about Episode II.
In an interview with StarWars.com during this year’s San Diego Com-Con, Ben Snow, director of Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series, revealed new information surrounding the second episode of the not-quite-a-game, but more-than-a-film VR experience.
SPOILERS INBOUND! Details surrounding Episode I & II discussed below:
In Episode I of Vader Immortal, the player—a force-sensitive smuggler traveling the galaxy alongside a wise-cracking droid side-kick—finds themselves in the clutches of the galaxies most feared Sith Lord after being forced to land on the volcanic planet of Mustafar. After some professional-level sneaking and a bit of parkour, players then find themselves navigating the maze-like catacombs beneath Vader’s base, during which they battle waves of Stormtroopers with a lightsaber. In the end, Vader thwarts your escape and—after a brief sequence in which you actually battle alongside the Sith Lord against a horde of ancient droid sentries—destroys your lightsaber. But it’s cool, he still promises to teach you the ways of the force.
According to Snow, Episode II is all about learning to harness these new-found Jedi—or Sith—powers.
“You will get to use the Force in Episode II,” said Snow during the interview. “The first image is really part of the training. The way we thought about this was, we wanted to give you the Vader equivalent of Yoda teaching Luke about the Force in Empire Strikes Back. So we wanted it to be slightly darker and more twisted. He talks about the power of the dark side as well as the things you can do with the Force. So in this moment that the concept art reveals, you see him starting to manipulate objects and he’s starting to show you how you can use the Force to create something. But then, of course, Vader takes it in his own direction.”
“That is something that we’re still working really hard on. To make it feel as good as we can. Our goal is to make the Force in Episode II as satisfying as the lightsaber felt in Episode I.”
Then there’s the Black Bishop, the shady character who appeared briefly alongside Vader in Episode I. “He becomes quite important in Episode II, and we learn about his background,” added Snow. “We’re trying to make it feel very atmospheric. This is a hidden area of the fortress that hasn’t really been explored. The Mustafarians know of it through legend. It’s a good chance to poke around in an unexplored part of Star Wars.”
No word yet on what role this cloaked figure will ultimately play in the ongoing series, though if his appearance in Episode I is any indicator, it appears as though the Bishop may be involved in Vader’s ultimate quest of mastery over death.
At $10 Vader Immortal: Episode I is currently one of the most attractive VR experiences available on Oculus Quest, Rift, and Rift S. The main story, while brief, is a non-stop thrill ride that dives deep into the lore behind one of the franchises most mysterious and beloved characters. Even after you’ve finished the story, you can still enjoy dozens of hours of fun courtesy of the lightsaber dojo, which allows you to go head-to-head with increasingly difficult enemies while unlocking different colored Kyber crystal in which to customize your lightsaber.
Unfortunately, no release date for Episode II has been provided as of yet. Episode I of Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is available for purchase now on the Oculus Quest, Rift, and Rift S for $9.99.
