Valve Programmer Set To Talk About Flagship VR Title As Rumors Swirl Regarding Half-Life
Kerry Davis’ guest talk at DigiPen will touch upon his most recent work on the companies first VR title.
Earlier this week, rumors once again began circulating in regards to the long-rumored Half-Life VR spin-off after Valve News Network discovered source code buried within a new update to Valve’s The Lab experience that points towards the existence of a Half-Life VR game.
Once decompiled, VNN found an entire skeleton for a VR experience entitled “Shooter.” Within this code are a variety of assets, procedurals, and variable names that directly reference numerous Half-Life characters, items, and locations.
VNN maintains that while this code does appear to be related to Half-Life, it was more than likely included as part of a long-abandoned demo. With Valve having already confirmed that their flagship VR title will be arriving on SteamVR-compatible headsets in 2019, however, it’s still possible that a Half-Life VR project is potentially in the works.
Hopefully, we’ll learn a little more this month when Valve programmer Kerry Davis stops by DigiPen Institute of Technology to give a guest speech regarding his time working at Valve Corporation. Davis, a former graduate of DigiPen, has worked on numerous high-profile projects during his 15-years at the company, including titles such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress.
In addition to chatting about past ventures, Davis will also be discussing his work on Valve’s yet-to-be-announced flagship VR title, which is set to be released later this year despite the company having released zero information on the experience.
Davis will be delivering his talk at DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, Washington September 14th. While it’s unlikely Davis will dive too deep into any relevant details, this talk hopefully signifies the impending arrival of an official reveal. With just a few months to go until the end of 2019, we expect that Valve will be making some major announcements regarding their long-promised trio of game-changing immersive experiences sooner than later.
Then again, this is Valve we’re talking about…
